The Speechwriter supports leadership by crafting clear, compelling, and accurate communications that translate complex scientific research and policy initiatives into accessible narratives for diverse audiences. This role is responsible for developing senior-level speeches, remarks, talking points, testimony, and presentations that advance and reflect the voice, priorities, and standards of federal leadership.
 
 
Key Responsibilities<ul><li>
Draft high-quality speeches, remarks, talking points, messages, internal communications, congressional testimony, and presentations.</li><li>
Synthesize information from internal and external sources into accurate, engaging, and audience-appropriate narratives.</li><li>
Translate complex scientific and technical concepts into clear, plain-language messaging while preserving technical accuracy.</li><li>
Tailor messaging for varied audiences, including Congress, scientific and professional associations, academic institutions, federal partners.</li><li>
Develop strategic communications plans, engagement strategies, and messaging frameworks to support initiatives, programs, and research activities.</li><li>
Collaborate with subject-matter experts, program officials, and communications staff to gather information, conduct interviews, and ensure factual accuracy.</li><li>
Edit and revise materials to align with the established voice, tone, and style of leadership and federal communications standards.</li><li>
Ensure all written products meet quality, clarity, and timeliness expectations in fast-paced, high-visibility environments.</li></ul> 

Qualifications<ul><li>
Minimum of 5 years of professional speechwriting experience for varied audiences and purposes.</li><li>
At least 3 years of speechwriting experience supporting science-focused, research, or technical organizations.</li><li>
Demonstrated experience researching, fact-checking, and validating content through interviews with subject-matter experts and program officials.</li><li>
Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and persuasively.</li><li>
Proven ability to tailor messaging to senior leadership and high-level audiences, including congressional and executive stakeholders.</li><li>
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments under tight deadlines.</li><li>
Experience working in or supporting federal agencies or large, mission-driven organizations is highly preferred.</li><li>

<div>Summary 
The Senior Website Designer / Project Manager provides strategic leadership and hands-on expertise in the design, development, and management of NSF&rsquo;s external and internal web platforms. This role leads web design initiatives, oversees project execution, and ensures that all web content meets federal usability, accessibility (Section 508/WCAG 2.0), plain language, and branding standards. The position serves as a primary liaison between NSF stakeholders and the Web Team, ensuring timely, high-quality delivery of web products and services. 
 
Key Responsibilities<ul><li>
Lead and manage website design and development projects supporting NSF.gov and the NSF Employee Portal.</li><li>
Oversee the creation, layout, and publication of webpages, news items, events, and official documents using Drupal CMS, ServiceNow Employee Center, and Microsoft SharePoint.</li><li>
Apply web design best practices, US Web Design System (USWDS) standards, and federal plain language requirements.</li><li>
Ensure all web content and digital assets meet Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 accessibility requirements.</li><li>
Manage project schedules, priorities, and deliverables while coordinating efforts among designers, developers, UX specialists, and publishers.</li><li>
Monitor and manage incoming requests through ServiceNow and Microsoft Lists, ensuring timely responses and accurate tracking.</li><li>
Provide guidance and quality assurance for visual design, layout consistency, SEO optimization, and content usability.</li><li>
Advise NSF staff on effective web design strategies, accessibility compliance, and use of visuals to enhance communication.</li><li>
Participate in special projects and provide leadership support as assigned by OLPA staff.</li></ul>
Qualifications<ul><li>
Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in computer science, web design, digital media, or a closely related discipline.</li><li>
Five (5) or more years of professional experience in website design and web development.</li><li>
Minimum three (3) years of experience working within a Drupal CMS environment, including Layout Builder and components.</li><li>
Strong working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript.</li><li>
Experience leading or managing small web development or design teams.</li><li>
Familiarity with the US Web Design System (USWDS).</li><li>
Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud for web-optimized graphics.</li><li>
Demonstrated experience with ServiceNow or similar ticketing systems.</li><li>
Proven experience supporting federal agencies or similarly regulated organizations.</li><li>
Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and project management skills.</li></ul>
