Compensation:
At S&amp;C, we are dedicated to providing competitive and equitable compensation for all our team members, and we are committed to transparency in our pay practices. The estimated annual base salary range for this position is $128,090 - $169,716.60. Individual pay within this salary range is determined by several compensable factors, including performance, knowledge, job-related skills and experience, and relevant education or training. This role is also eligible for S&amp;C&rsquo;s annual incentive plan (AIP), subject to eligibility criteria.
Join Our Team as a Senior Staff Software Engineer!
S&amp;C Electric Company is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to serve as a Technical Lead within our embedded firmware organization. This role combines deep hands‑on development with broad technical ownership, architectural decision‑making, and mentoring influence across projects and teams.
As a Senior Staff Software Engineer, you will be responsible for setting firmware technical direction , ensuring architectural integrity, and guiding delivery of complex, safety‑critical embedded systems used in intelligent, microprocessor‑based switch and fault‑interrupting control products.
This is remote position. Occasional travel (up to 10%) to other S&amp;C locations (Franklin, Chicago or Alameda) may be required for system integration, advanced debugging, and cross‑site collaboration. You will report to the Embedded Firmware Manager and act as a trusted technical partner to engineering leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership &amp; Architecture
<ul><li>Serve as technical lead for embedded firmware across one or more product lines or major initiatives.
</li><li>Define and own firmware architecture, design patterns, coding standards, and best practices.
</li><li>Make and defend system‑level technical decisions balancing performance, safety, reliability, power, and long‑term maintainability.
</li><li>Lead technical design reviews and act as a final authority on complex firmware issues.
</li></ul>Firmware Development
<ul><li>Design and implement embedded application firmware for microprocessor‑based fault‑interrupting and control systems.
</li><li>Develop and review embedded C/C++ firmware , including low‑level drivers for custom hardware and low‑power designs.
</li><li>Oversee and contribute to real‑time behavior, fault tolerance, watchdogs, bootloaders, and firmware update mechanisms.
</li><li>Develop supporting PC‑based engineering tools, diagnostics, and test utilities as needed.
</li></ul>Delivery &amp; Execution
<ul><li>Translate product, system, and regulatory requirements into executable software designs and implementation strategies.
</li><li>Create accurate development estimates, influence schedules, and identify technical risks early.
</li><li>Define and enforce unit, integration, and system‑level test strategies; ensure robust automated testing.
</li><li>Partner closely with hardware, systems, test, product management, and manufacturing teams to ensure successful product delivery.
</li></ul>Mentorship &amp; Influence
<ul><li>Mentor and coach software engineers at multiple levels through code reviews, design guidance, and technical problem‑solving.
</li><li>Raise the overall technical bar of the organization through knowledge sharing and continuous improvement initiatives.
</li><li>Act as a technical escalation point for complex field issues and root‑cause investigations.
</li></ul>Innovation &amp; Continuous Improvement
<ul><li>Evaluate new tools, technologies, and architectures relevant to embedded and grid‑control systems.
</li><li>Drive improvements in development workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and engineering processes.
</li>Author clear technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and design rationale.

What You&rsquo;ll Need to Succeed
<ul><li>10+ years of professional experience in embedded software and firmware development.
</li><li>Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
</li><li>Deep expertise in C/C++ for embedded systems, including low‑level hardware interaction.
</li><li>Extensive experience designing firmware with and without RTOS environments.
</li><li>Strong working knowledge of Python for tooling, testing, and automation.
</li><li>Advanced understanding of real‑time systems, low‑power operation, and concurrency.
</li><li>Hands‑on experience with lab equipment (DMMs, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers).
</li><li>Proven experience writing drivers for peripherals and interfaces (GPIO, I2C, SPI, ADC, DAC, UART, DMA, flash).
</li><li>Strong experience with source control and collaboration tools (Git/Bitbucket, Jira, Confluence).
</li><li>Demonstrated ability to lead technically without direct authority and influence cross‑functional teams.
</li><li>Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
</li>Self‑directed, systems‑thinking mindset with a passion for engineering excellence.

</li></ul>Preferred Qualifications
<ul><li>Experience with electric grid automation , protection, or utility control systems.
</li><li>Knowledge of peer‑to‑peer, wired, and wireless communications (Ethernet, Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi).
</li><li>Experience with signal processing (FFT/DFT, waveform analysis) or actuator/motor control.
</li><li>Background with embedded Linux, Zephyr, or other RTOS platforms .
</li><li>Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins and containerization tools like Docker .
