The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is hiring and we are looking for motivated, professional individuals ready to commit in making South Dakota a safer place. The DCI Law Enforcement Training (LET) Coordinator is responsible for coordinating basic and advanced law enforcement training courses. Duties include:
<ul><li>recruiting and selecting instructors (adjunct, vendor or contractor);
</li><li>developing training schedules;
</li><li>providing course materials to students and instructors;
</li><li>ensuring classroom and range readiness;
</li><li>supervising student and instructor behavior in classroom and dormitory setting;
</li><li>enforcing student academic, disciplinary, and performance standards;
</li><li>developing lesson plans and other course materials;
</li><li>managing training resources and facilities;
</li><li>assessing the effectiveness of course materials and instructor delivery;
</li><li>maintaining course and student records &ndash; paper and electronic;
</li><li>establishing and maintaining a positive rapport with SD law enforcement agencies;
</li><li>providing instruction to basic and advanced students as needed, based on qualifications;
</li><li>providing instruction of arrest and control tactic techniques for basic and advanced training.
 </li></ul>This position may involve periodic travel as needed for work or training.
Licenses and Certifications:
 
The incumbent will be sponsored by Law Enforcement Training to attend any trainings or certifications necessary to be proficient in training duties.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
 
Knowledge of:
<ul><li>basic law enforcement operations;
</li><li>adult learning techniques, principles and methods;
</li><li>arrest and control tactic techniques;
</li><li>use of force law and de-escalation training;
</li><li>effective use of training materials;
</li><li>Microsoft office products and software.
</li></ul>Skill to:
<ul><li>use computers to send email, enter data, and use Microsoft Office products;
</li><li>prioritize, organize, and manage multiple tasks
</li><li>experience with developing new curriculum
</li><li>develop learning objectives, lesson plans, and evaluation tools;
</li><li>teach and demonstrate arrest and control tactic techniques;
 </li></ul>Ability to:
<ul><li>solve problems and resolve conflicts;
</li><li>providing instruction to basic and advanced students as needed, based on qualifications;
</li><li>communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
</li><li>build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
</li><li>provide recommendations to correct student performance or behavioral issues;
</li><li>participate in intensive training up to 10 hours per day;
</li><li>attend applicable training to better perform job duties;
</li><li>work well with others and be a team player.

Position Purpose:
 
Position reports, transcribes, and serves as the guardian of the verbatim stenographic record of official court proceedings in an accurate, impartial, and confidential manner. Duties may include:
<ul><li>Attending court sessions and providing verbatim reporting on those proceedings to ensure justice is upheld and provides the necessary written verbatim record as to whether procedures, laws, and statutes were appropriately followed in order to determine whether a decision should be upheld or reversed.
</li><li>Transcribing and producing transcripts requested by the Judge and other court personnel in regard to proceedings that have been reported.
</li><li>Scheduling the Judge's court calendar to ensure hearings and trials are held in a timely manner and does not conflict with the other court schedule/events.
</li><li>Preparing correspondence, answering the telephone and taking messages, and responding to attorneys' or parties' inquiries on behalf of the Judge to ensure timely responses.
</li><li>Performing other work as assigned, depending on Circuit/Judge.
</li></ul>Minimum Qualifications: 
 
Graduation from an accredited or non-accredited court reporting school with a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification and the ability to type 225 words per minute with 95% accuracy. South Dakota Notary Public is required to swear in witnesses in the courtroom. No experience is necessary.
Successful completion of a criminal background investigation is required for employment.
5% increase in salary after successful completion of CRR (Certified Real-time Reporter) certification.
The fee for the preparation of a transcript from a court reporter's notes of evidence is $3.60 per page for the original. The fee for a copy, furnished on request, is $0.65 per page, to be paid to the officer of the court who prepared the transcript. Depending on the location transcript work can be moderate to extensive. Court reporters may be allowed to freelance and perform outside depositional work that does not involve the recording and/or transcribing of official judicial system court proceedings outside of normal office hours and for additional compensation as court calendars permit.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
 
Knowledge of:
<ul><li>courtroom procedures, standards, and ethics;
</li><li>legal terminology and processes;
</li><li>producing courtroom transcripts;
</li><li>English language, including meaning, spelling, rules, and grammar;
</li><li>court reporter equipment and software and recording equipment.
</li></ul>Ability to:
<ul><li>write shorthand at least 225 words per minute with 95% accuracy;
</li><li>stay up-to-date with changes in terminology, slang, and reporting procedures;
</li><li>troubleshoot and solve court reporter computer equipment and software issues;
</li><li>concentrate and focus for extended periods of time;
</li><li>listen to emotional testimony without reacting or forming opinions;
</li><li>maintain confidential information and proceedings;
</li><li>meet timeframes and deadlines in producing transcripts;
</li><li>schedule proceedings with multiple parties;
</li><li>communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally;
</li><li>maintain a professional demeanor when proceedings become emotional and volatile.
