TITLE: Instructional Aide - Teacher Assistant 
FLSA: Non-exempt

GENERAL SUMMARY 
Under direct supervision, provides general teaching assistance to assigned Teacher(s). Conducts such duties to support instruction as preparing copies, preparing mailings, light typing and data entry, etc. May use computers in performing assigned tasks. Reports to assigned Teacher(s) or principal. Duties may be specialized to area of instruction, type of students, etc. 
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
Provides classroom teaching assistance such as reinforcing skills, monitoring in-school-suspension classroom and/or detention hall, completing roll call and student counts; administering make-up tests, etc. Assists teachers with academic instruction and classroom activities; prepares and disseminates materials for classroom activities. 
Sets up classroom for special activities as assigned such as preparing materials for classroom, setting up charts, etc. 
Arranges for field trips (permission slips, arrangement of transportation, etc.), speakers/presenters, and related educational activities; accompanies class on field trips as required. 
Provides clerical support by performing such duties as light typing and data entry, routine sorting and filing, and routine posting to ledgers. 
Types, completes and/or files various records and forms. 
Collects incoming monies for field trips, school pictures, and other school fees; prepares receipts for monies collected. 
Performs miscellaneous duties as required such as distributing materials, scheduling parent or teacher appointments, ordering supplies, scheduling tutoring, escorting students to other areas of the school, etc. 
Operates general office equipment such as a typewriter, computer, copier, laminator, and calculator. 
Performs other related duties as required. 
JOB SPECIFICATIONS 
Education and Experience: 
Minimum 2 years of college. 
Knowledge: 
Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation. Working knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and operations. General knowledge of modern office equipment such as typewriters, copiers, and
INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE 
calculators. Knowledge of clerical functions such as typing, filing and sorting. Knowledge in the application of classroom instruction and teaching. 
Skills/Effort: 
Skill in the use of general office equipment such as calculators, typewriters, computer, copier, etc. Good written and verbal communication, organization, basic mathematical, and telephone skills. Ability to interact with co-workers, students and school staff in a courteous and professional manner. Ability to provide assistance to teachers in classroom situations. 
Working Conditions: 
Conducts duties in an office/school/work environment with no significant exposure to environmental conditions. Physical demands are restricted to office work requiring lifting/moving of items up to 25 pounds. Job requires the operation of standard office equipment. 
Responsibility: 
No budgetary or supervisory responsibility.

TITLE: Academic Support Technician 
FLSA: Non-Exempt 
SUMMARY: 
The job of Academic Support Technician is to provide students with instructional assistance under the guidance of a classroom teacher, instructional coach or school lead interventionist. The school level administration will designate the teacher, instructional coach, or lead interventionist as the overseer of the position. This Academic Support Position will include working in classroom, small group settings or working alongside the school interventionist to provide literacy or math instruction based on student need. The position may include working with various levels of proficiency to allow the classroom teacher to work with students needing more specialized instruction. The position may include working with some small groups of students needing assistance or a small group of students that work more independently needing supervision or limited feedback. The Academic Support Technician position may include monitoring the progress of the students and identifying those who are not progressing. The Academic Support Technician will be a member of a collaborative team working toward increasing student achievement. 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
<ul><li>Collaborate with all school staff and administration.
</li><li>Adhere to the ethical standards, established rules and regulations of Spartanburg School District Two, as well as the state of South Carolina.
</li><li>Assist teachers in building a solid educational foundation for children.
</li><li>Ability to meet demands from several people and communicate effectively.
</li><li>Should be actively involved with children 85% of the time.
</li><li>Should spend a minimal amount of time on non-instructional duties. These tasks should be completed during planning periods or after school.
</li><li>Help teachers in maintaining an academically engaged classroom.
</li><li>Work with various groups (those that finish early, an individual that needs to be removed from the group, those needing to make up assignments).
</li><li>Maintain a positive attitude and help to build a positive school culture.
</li><li>Maintain confidentiality. Any student information regarding performance, achievement or behavior is confidential information.
</li><li>Maintain confidentiality regarding other employees of the school. If the AST has concerns about a colleague he/she should report the concern to school level administration.
</li><li>Assists the teacher in implementing instructional plans. This can include providing support while the teacher is providing instruction, giving lessons independently when the teacher is unavailable and providing small group tutoring to students who need additional assistance.
</li><li>Provide strong academic support for assigned small groups/individual students to ensure instruction is differentiated based on student need.
</li><li>Support classroom teachers through observing the student and collecting data in the school setting.
</li>Other duties as assigned.
