Description:

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor&rsquo;s Office in South Bend, Indiana, is seeking a secretary for its Special Victims Unit, which investigates and prosecutes sex crimes and child abuse. 
The St. Joseph County Prosecutor&rsquo;s Office is committed to protecting everyone in our community by keeping dangerous criminals off our streets, rehabilitating those who can contribute to our community, and respecting victims of crime. 
Our team includes Prosecutor Ken Cotter, deputy prosecuting attorneys, paralegals, investigators, child support caseworkers, victim advocates, and support staff. We work with residents, police, and other government leaders to make St. Joseph County a better place to live and raise a family. 
Essential Functions: 
The secretary provides administrative assistance to attorneys and paralegals, including typing pleadings, correspondence, and other documents from handwritten instructions. The secretary will forward victim information to victim advocates; compose and type routine correspondence and read and route incoming mail; scan police reports, correspondence, and legal documents into the office case management system and send them to appropriate courts or offices; ensure proper indexing and electronic filing of legal documents; and perform other duties as assigned from time to time. The secretary will occasionally work on weekend or holiday mornings to assist with weekend criminal charging per the office rotation schedule. 
Qualifications: 
Qualifications: Employee will be held to a high level of confidentiality. To perform successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Employee must be punctual and able to focus on work duties during normal work hours. 
 Education and/or Experience: High school graduation level language and mathematical skills and computer and equipment operation skills equivalent to a business school certificate or comparable experience. Criminal Justice degree preferred. 
 Physical Demands: Employee must be able to sit and perform common clerical tasks; carry files and supplies as needed; walk short distances to equipment and converse with co-workers regarding office duties. Also, must be able to file documents and/or retrieve paperwork from the courthouse. Position does not require any heavy, repetitive, or overhead lifting. 
 Work Environment: Interior office environment in close proximity to other legal secretaries, attorneys, paralegals and victim advocates. 
NOTE: Employee must work occasional half days on Saturdays or holidays as required by office need to file charges within 48 hours.</div>

Please note: This position is for current undergrad college students with the ability for in-person work on the University of Notre Dame campus in South Bend, IN. Those hired are to begin during the 2025-2026 academic year. Current seniors should not apply.

Incumbent serves as an Investigator for St. Joseph County Cyber Crimes Unit, responsible for investigating criminal cases on behalf of both the defense of those accused of crimes and as a digital forensic examiner. Students will acquire, parse, and analyze information from digital evidence involved in active case investigations and pending prosecutions, while learning the process of digital analysis and investigation. Students may also be exposed to learning experiences related to cyber forensics, digital investigations, and forensics research.
The Digital Forensics Investigator program is geared towards students looking to enter the field of cybersecurity and analysis post-graduation. This program is structured for the student to participate in their entire academic career once selected. Since this internship involves conducting digital forensics on evidence in active criminal cases and prosecutions, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor will swear in students so that they will have law enforcement powers during their time working as a Digital Forensics Investigator.
Student Investigators will be paid for their participation (10 hours a week). Positions cover the entire academic year, and summer opportunities are also available. The starting rate of pay is $15.00 per hour and may increase based on demonstration of proficiency and obtaining industry certifications. Students will select their own working schedule based on what is best given their academic schedule and other responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Assists law enforcement officers by conducting digital forensics for active case investigations.
Assists federal and state prosecutors and defense attorneys by conducting digital forensics for criminal case prosecutions.
Conducts evidence intake, chain of custody, and recording.
Makes court appearances and testimony, if needed.
May research technology and digital analysis topics.
Extensive writing of warrants, reports, and other papers. 
Qualifications

Must be a United States Citizen (Per Indiana Code 36-8-3.5-12)

Basic knowledge of computers, mobile devices, and online social networking sites.

Excellent writing, critical thinking, and creative thinking skills.

Willingness to sign and maintain a confidentiality agreement.

Willingness to work with subject matter that may be disturbing.

Willingness to submit to an advanced background check and drug test.

Ability to meet all hiring and retention requirements, including passage of a drug test.
Working knowledge of goals, objectives, tasks, and activities of the Unit, and ability to accomplish tasks and activities with accuracy and completeness, and meet formal deadlines.
Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and the ability to prepare various detailed reports.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, County employees, Commissioners, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Shall comply with employer and Unit policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct. Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written and oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
Ability to compile, collate, and classify data, and analyze, evaluate, observe, diagnose, and investigate.
Ability to work with others in a team environment and work on several tasks at the same time, often under time pressure.

Education/Experience

High school diploma or HSE.

Physical Requirements

While in the Student Investigator program, students will work out of the St. Joseph County Cyber Crimes Unit, currently housed in Hammes Mowbray Hall on the Notre Dame campus.

Incumbent performs duties in a standard office environment, involving sitting/walking at will, sitting for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds, bending, reaching, keyboarding, speaking clearly, close vision, handling/grasping objects, and hearing sounds/communication.</div>
