 Are you ready to make a meaningful impact through public service? The Iowa State Public Defender&rsquo;s Office is seeking a highly motivated, skilled, and enthusiastic attorney to serve as a Public Defender 1 in our Cedar Rapids office located in Linn County, Iowa.

 The mission of the Office of the State Public Defender is to ensure that all indigent persons in Iowa are provided high quality legal representation in criminal, juvenile, and other eligible proceedings in the most efficient and fiscally responsible manner.
 
 
 
 What You&rsquo;ll Do
 
 
 
 As a Public Defender attorney in this position, you will:
 
 
 <ul>
 <li>
 Advocate for indigent clients in assigned cases at every state of the criminal justice system at a trainee level.
 </li>
 <li>
 Receive training and mentoring from dedicated, experienced public defenders in an atmosphere which encourages growth and development of an attorney&rsquo;s skills and career.
 </li>
 <li>
 Represent clients in court at pre-trial hearings, bench or jury trials sentencings and other court hearings.
 </li>
 <li>
 Prepare a defense, conducting legal research, gathering facts, and interviewing the client and witnesses to determine the merits of case and appropriate course of action.
 </li>
 <li>
 Conduct pretrial discovery, including depositions, withdraw pleas, and suppression motions.
 </li>
 <li>
 Negotiate plea bargains, dismissals, or other disposition of assigned cases with prosecuting attorneys.
 </li>
 <li>
 Work closely with clients, providing and discussing information, plan case strategy and trial preparation.
 </li>
 <li>
 Maintain appropriate communication with clients about case status and answering client questions.
 </li>
 <li>
 Identify potential legal issues to advance client&rsquo;s case, research applicable law, and draft appropriate motions and briefs
 </li>
 <li>
 Prepare various legal documents, including written arraignments, written guilty pleas, motions, briefs, and letters.
 </li>
 <li>
 May direct work of investigators consistent with internal office policies.
 </li>
 <li>
 Maintain client case files, prepare public defender time reports to the court, and close files consistent with office policies.

 The salary for this position is $24.00/hour/$1,920.00 bi-weekly/$49,920.00 annual.

 Correctional Officer Job Duties
 
 
 
 As part of a multi-disciplinary team, observes incarcerated individual behavior/interaction with staff, other incarcerated individuals, and visitors; communicates and documents observations to ensure effective security and consistent application of incarcerated individual change principles.
 
 
 Continuously interacts with incarcerated individuals, utilizing behavioral techniques to assist in the development of problem-solving skills, facilitating behavior change, role-playing, effective disapproval, providing positive reinforcement when appropriate, and instituting corrective measures through the effective use of disapproval.
 
 
 Patrols facilities and makes security checks; conducts rounds and incarcerated individual counts; inspects all areas of the institution and grounds for safety/security deficiencies.
 
 
 Conducts searches of incarcerated individuals, vehicles, packages, equipment, incarcerated individuals&rsquo; cells and property for contraband items. With a balanced approach, instructs incarcerated individuals in rules, policy, procedure, expectations, and assists incarcerated individuals in the development of attitudes and skills necessary for successful adaptation to life within an institution and a pro-social lifestyle.
 
 
 Escorts incarcerated individuals, visitors, and staff inside/outside of the institution and verifies possession of appropriate passes or legal documents. Interacts with the general public, visitors, and victims in person or via phone.
 
 
 Provides information, security, and assistance. Role models pro-social behaviors that convey dignity and respect for others and acknowledge that incarcerated individuals can change their lives by development of skills and the adoption of pro-social attitudes and behaviors.
 
 
 Maintains logs, prepares reports, and enters information into the Department of Corrections electronic record system. Supervises incarcerated individual work assignments and evaluates work performance.
 
 
 Operates electronic doors, telephone systems, two-way radios, intercom, alarm systems, closed circuit TV systems, personal data assistants, computer terminals, and weapons/incarcerated individual control devices.
 
 
 Attends training and professional development classes.
