 This post presents an excellent opportunity to join the establishing & expanding HPB/NET (Hepatobiliary/Neuroendocrine Carcinoma) team with a varied portfolio of early & late clinical trials as a Clinical Research Nurse (CRN).
 
Research nursing is an exciting & developing role, supported through the R&I division with a good education & development package in place to ensure that staff reach their potential.
 
Central to this role is the responsibility of assessing & managing the complex needs of patients participating in a clinical trial, including the delivery of all specified treatments for participants in research within a multidisciplinary team. Key responsibilities of the post include the coordination of the trial protocols & working alongside the clinical trial coordinators.
 
A background in oncology, flexibility in working, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Experience in clinical research and/or HPB/NET malignancies would be desirable.
 
An informal discussion about the post is strongly recommended with the possibility to spend some time with the team to understand better the requirement of the role.
 
The CRN will be involved in every stage of the portfolio activities including feasibility reviews of new clinical trial opportunities, set-up and activation of new trials, patient recruitment and management, supporting team with data query resolution, reviewing protocol amendments, providing patient-centred insights to the research delivery team by supporting both the patients and the team through all aspects of clinical research of the HPB/NET portfolio.
 
With support from the team the CRN will ensure that the safety and wellbeing of the patients is maintained within the requirement of the multi-regulatory frameworks for clinical research ensuring compliance with ICH/GCP standards and Trust SOPs.
 
By utilising national frameworks for auditing patients experience the CRN will ensure the patients in the HPB/NET portfolio studies will have the best possible experience whilst participating in clinical research.
 
Raise the profile of the clinical research nurse and clinical trials within the trust by engaging in promotional events relating to clinical research with attendance and contributions at local, national and international meetings.
 
Demonstrate awareness and contribution to divisional, Trust and national objectives and strategies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Clinical Research Co-ordination
 <ul>
<li>Work autonomously in all areas of practice relating to clinical research.</li>
<li>Understand and deliver care in accordance with regulatory approved clinical research protocols</li>
<li>Understand the process for obtaining NHS permissions (R&D approval) for conducting clinical trials at site. As project lead, ensure permissions are in place prior to any patient recruitment.</li>
<li>Participate in clinical trial feasibilities and risk assessments of clinical trial protocols.</li>
<li>Ensure all clinical trial activities are recorded in appropriate systems in a timely manner.</li>
<li>Awareness of trial specific, regional and national targets. Identify and implement strategies for recruiting patients to clinical trials ensuring that targets for patient recruitment are delivered.</li>
<li>Delegation and oversight of research related activities to research team members (clinical and administrative) and ensure compliance with SOPs and ICH/GCP.</li>
<li>Arrange and facilitate clinical trial related meetings.</li>
<li>Involvement in appropriate financial remunerations for clinical trial activity.</li>
</ul>
Clinical Service and Professional Responsibilities
 <ul>
<li>Assimilation of highly complex information relating to clinical trials and communication to patients at a level appropriate to their understanding. Ensure highly sensitive information is communicated to patients, relatives, and carers regarding prognosis</li>
<li>Contribute to the development, implementation, and review of specialist care pathways in conjunction with appropriate personnel.</li>
<li>Demonstration of expert knowledge in specialist area to maintain clinical excellence.</li>
<li>Demonstrate awareness of divisional and trust strategic objectives including performance indicators and metrics.</li>
<li>Escalation of governance issues impacting on delivery of job purpose.</li>
<li>To act as a primary contact point for the clinical trial patients and act as adviser to other health care professionals.</li>
<li>Responsibility for maintenance and development of professional knowledge and practice by attending mandatory and specialist training in accordance with local policy.</li>
<li>Ensuring care delivery standards in accordance with trial protocol, local policy, NMC Code of Practice Conduct and current best practice.</li>
<li>Development and maintenance of a high-quality service by:</li>
</ul>
1. Overseeing the safe administration of all licensed and unlicensed medicinal products within the context of a clinical trial.
 2. Overseeing assessment and evaluation of treatment toxicities and initiation of appropriate intervention.
 3. Contribute to development of specialist Standard Operating Procedures and guidelines.
 <ul>
<li>Provide education and support for non-research staff in the delivery of protocol driven treatment for all patients.</li>
<li>Participate in monitoring and audit activities within research team</li>
<li>To carry out non-medical prescribing within scope of professional practice and in accordance with local policies and procedures and national legislation (optional and depending on clinical service needs).</li>
</ul>
Personal Education, Training and Development
 <ul>
<li>Maintain professional development whilst evaluating own specialist knowledge and practice through a process of appraisal and personal development planning.</li>
<li>Promote the role of the clinical research nurse as an integral part of the healthcare system.</li>
<li>Increase and maintain awareness of current advances in cancer treatments, research and nursing practice thereby maintaining the highest standard of care for patients with cancer and implementing evidence-based care by continuing professional development.</li>
<li>Participation in trust-wide education programmes and study days.</li>
<li>Obtain clinical supervision as appropriate.</li>
<li>To keep up to date with departmental, Trust, UK and EU developments for the management of clinical research ensuring timely, effective implementation of changes.</li>

Staff Management and Development
 <ul>
<li>To Support the Senior Clinical Research Nurse in the induction and continued supervision of junior members of staff, ensuring compliance with regulatory compliance and legislation.</li>
<li>Support the development of specialist study days within own research team.</li>
<li>Assist in the provision of specialist education and training in relation to clinical trials to all key stakeholders.</li>
<li>Disseminate information by attendance and /or presentations at local, national and international conferences/meetings</li>
<li>Contribute to the development of members of the research team</li>

EU DIRECTIVE ICH/GCP
 All personnel involved in clinical research have a responsibility to ensure that clinical trials are conducted in accordance with the EU Directive and ICH/GCP.

Clinical Research Nurse Band 6

This 40-hour per week Fellowship offers an exciting opportunity for a senior medical trainee to join the Breast Disease Group at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. The role forms part of an expanding research programme within the Systemic Therapy Research Group, aimed at significantly increasing research output across Medical Oncology.
 
This post is ideal for a motivated and enthusiastic applicant with a medical degree who is seeking a career in Medical Oncology and wishes to develop expertise in breast cancer research and clinical trials.
 
The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary research team comprising three medical oncology consultants, research nurses, and clinical trial coordinators. The group delivers a diverse portfolio of studies, including investigator-led, academic, and commercial trials. These encompass biomarker research, real-world data analyses, and interventional therapeutic studies across all phases (I–III).Fellows are actively supported to present at conferences and publish their work.
 
The role includes attending 2–3 research clinics per week and contributing to the care of breast cancer patients enrolled in early- and late-phase clinical trials within the Clinical Research Facility. Additional opportunities are provided to gain experience in the management of early and advanced breast cancer through ward work and outpatient clinics.
 
Successful applicants will divide their time between research and a moderate clinical commitment; this may involve clinical research and audit activities, including protocol-writing. The post-holder will work closely with other members of the respective multidisciplinary teams and will support the consultants, specialist registrars, and clinical research nurses in managing the disease group clinical trial portfolios. This will facilitate more rapid clinical decision making, an increase in the number of trials opened, together with increased recruitment of patients into new and existing research protocols.
 
The Fellow will attend appropriate clinics per week (a maximum of three research and two NHS clinics), and multidisciplinary meetings. In addition, they will participate in clinical research meetings and any other relevant trial planning or trial set-up meetings. The Fellow will also spend time reviewing clinical data, writing abstracts/manuscripts, planning new studies and attending educational meetings.
 
The postholder will contribute to the delivery of high‑quality consultant‑led care across 7 days. This includes participation in planned weekend and weekday clinical activity to support safe, timely decision‑making and continuity of care for patients.

The Breast Research group based at the Christie is comprised of 3 consultants, research nurses and data managers who undertake a range of research and clinical trial programmes. There will also be additional team members providing direct clinical care in the outpatient areas, these include ANPs, clinical fellows, GPs and the secondary breast cancer nursing team.
 The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide senior input to the care of the medical oncology Breast patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.
 The post holder is committed to delivering at least four of the following:

<li>Successfully publish at least two first-author peer-reviewed manuscripts.</li>

<li>Increase the international profile of the Disease Group, The Christie Institute Cancer Education and The Christie Medical Oncology Fellowship programme.</li>

</ul>
The Clinical Research fellow will have the following opportunities within the Department of Medical Oncology:
 <ul>
<li>Audit: Fellows play a key role in Clinical Audit as a member of The Christie Medical staff.</li>
<li>Clinics: Research fellows in Medical Oncology usually attend several outpatient clinics per week</li>
</ul>
(seeing new referrals, follow-ups and patients on clinical trials) and are expected to undertake the
 administrative duties associated with the care of these patients.
 <ul>
<li>Clinical Governance: Fellows are expected to participate in all relevant aspects of clinical</li>
</ul>
governance, including maintaining up-to-date protocols, guidelines, and clinical audit, under the
 supervision of the Consultants in the team.

In addition, there is an annual research event where all Medical Oncology fellows are encouraged to present their on-going research and a little about themselves. There are also weekly teaching sessions in practical life skills related to Medical Oncology, such as interview skills, oral presentation skills, curriculum vitae preparation, media training, career development etc.
 <ul>
<li>Professional Development: Fellows should also maintain a level of continuing professional development consistent with the recommendations of the Royal College of Physicians. Appropriate arrangements for study leave will be made in conjunction with colleagues. There is the potential to attend international meetings to present research work and fellows are expected to be involved in writing papers and reviews and will also be required to undergo an annual appraisal.</li>
<li>Protocol Development: Fellows may also assist with the revision and development of evidence based clinical trial protocols for patients.</li>
<li>Research: There are excellent opportunities for research within the Department. Fellows are encouraged to contribute to current research projects within the unit and/or set up new projects.</li>
</ul>
The Manchester Cancer Research Centre has been established to bring together the expertise, ambition and resources of partner organizations, which include the University of Manchester, the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, Cancer Research UK, in addition to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.
 The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide senior input to Breast Research Team.
 
Continuing Professional Development
 The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these
 activities.
 
Role Planning
 The weekly timetable for the post is flexible and can be agreed with appropriate supervisors prior to
 commencement in post. As outlined previously, this would include a maximum of three research and
 two NHS clinics per week. Arrangements to visit the hospital may be made directly with key contacts
 indicated above within individual post descriptions.
 Weekend working will consist of clinical activities that are scheduled in advance and reviewed where
 required as work schedules are reviewed, taking account of service needs.
 
On call Commitments
 This role does not require participation in the on-call rota.
