<div>About The Position 
 
The Senior Research Scientist (Pre-clinical) serves as a scientific lead for pre-clinical research projects at the Uniformed Services University (USU) Center for Biotechnology (4DBio&sup3;), providing technical and management support and overseeing project execution. In addition, the Senior Research Scientist (Pre-clinical) will bring critical subject matter expertise to 4DBio&sup3; and assist in coordinating the efforts of a multi-disciplinary team of government and contract researchers, academic experts and consumers, all in support of the 4DBio&sup3; mission. Among other projects, the Senior Research Scientist (Pre-clinical) will play a key leadership role on 4DBio&sup3;'s blood research portfolio that includes the On-Demand Blood project which is focused on developing the scientific understanding and bioengineering solutions to manufacture and/or optimize a full range of human blood products for use in austere environments. 
 
This position is 100% onsite at the Uniformed Services University Offsite 4DBio&sup3; Laboratory in Rockville, MD. A thorough government background check will be administered. We are seeking to fill this role asap, therefore visa sponsorship may not be available. 
 
About The Program 
 
The USU 4DBio&sup3; is a Center for Biotechnology that develops and adapts promising new biotechnology to benefit Warfighter readiness and resilience. It champions a multidisciplinary approach that combines various Department of Defense (DoD) and federal and non-federal experts across traditional and emerging fields. The 4DBio&sup3; Center promotes the development and application of advanced biotechnologies and services within the DoD to enhance the readiness, health, and well-being of America&rsquo;s Warfighters, veterans, and families today. Potential for a faculty appointment at USUHS, commensurate with experience, for qualified applicants 
 
Salary Range 
 
$135,000 - $155,000. Salaries are determined based on several factors including external market data, internal equity, and the candidate&rsquo;s related knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
This position is based in a university academic setting and involves working within a laboratory environment. It offers a great opportunity to engage and collaborate with fellow scientists and researchers.
Qualifications<ul><li>
Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., biology, pathology, biochemistry, bioengineering, molecular and cell biology, or genetics) required</li><li>
3-5 years&rsquo; experience with planning and management of innovative medical and/or scientific research programs
</li><li>Minimum 8 years direct experience in hematopoiesis research such as cell culture and differentiation of stem cells and/or synthetic blood substitutes</li><li>
Experience with multi-color flow cytometry and cell sorting</li><li>
Experience with blood cell function assays</li><li>
Experience with gene editing and molecular biology techniques</li><li>
Ability to design and execute in vitro experiments</li><li>
Knowledge of red blood cell alternatives preferred</li><li>
Experience in blood cell storage and freezing preferred</li><li>
Experience with scale up cultures in bioreactors preferred</li><li>
Experience and success in writing and receiving federal research grants, cooperative agreements, and/or contracts</li><li>
Experience working in DoD or other Federal research environments</li><li>
Experience supervising research personnel</li><li>
Ability to exercise independent judgment in fast-paced, high-pressure environment with strict deadlines, and to manage multiple projects simultaneously</li><li>
Ability to work with senior leaders to help advise on upcoming projects and scientific initiatives</li><li>
Ability to perform analyses of research portfolios to identify critical gaps, exceptional results and/or lack of progress</li><li>
Knowledge and experience with Department of Defense (DoD) Grants and Agreements administration and management, preferred</li></ul>
Responsibilities<ul><li>
Perform recurring analyses on research portfolios to identify critical gaps, exceptional results and/or lack of progress</li><li>
Assist in the preparation of SOPs and analysis of laboratory experiments</li><li>
Prepare interim and final progress reports</li><li>
Ensure research integrity</li><li>
Disseminate research results</li><li>
Provide guidance to scientists preparing research proposals, to include guidance on research protocol development, as needed</li><li>
Maintain open communication with Principal Investigators and Center Leadership, advises of processes, reports progress, and serves as a point of contact, as applicable</li><li>
Perform scientific reviews on research proposals submitted for consideration, as requested</li><li>
Direct multifunctional teams and provides scientific domain expertise as needed</li><li>
Adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and infection control procedures, as applicable</li><li>
Maintain and update files of all applicable regulatory documentation for IACUC or IRB (including protocols, approvals, amendments, modifications, etc.) as well as any communications with the sponsor or any other Federal or regulatory office (including prior approvals, change in scope, etc.), as needed</li></ul>
Management Responsibilities<ul><li>
Ability to provide strong leadership for diverse research teams</li><li>
Ability to supervise the work of laboratory personnel in the performance of experiments, data collection, analysis and reports, as applicable</li></ul></div>

About the Position 
 
The Bioinformatics Analyst will use computational and statistical tools to interpret vast biological datasets to support scientific research and discoveries. Duties will include designing algorithms, databases, collaborating with researchers, and analyze and communicate complex findings through visualizations and reports.
QUALIFICATIONS<ul><li>
Masters Degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genetics, Pre-Med/Nursing, or a related scientific field preferred</li><li>
AHIC (Health Informatics Certification) is a plus</li><li>
1 year medical paraprofessional experience</li><li>
1 year working in clinical informationcs department at an accredited university</li><li>
Minimum 2-3 years of combined experience next generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis, adept in the development of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis pipelines and large-scale data management and processing</li><li>
Minimum 3 years of experience in full software development life cycle with strong skills in software analysis, database design, data modeling, different data types architecture development and data management</li><li>
Experience working with internal and/or external stakeholders on solution design and implementation</li><li>
Programming languages: R, PHP, JavaScript, Perl, Python, SQL, Shell Scripting and Java. Computing Environments: HPC clusters, SLURM, Linux, Mac OS X, Windows</li><li>
Working knowledge of biomedical ontologies (i.e. UMLS, RxNorm, SNOMED CT)</li><li>
Working knowledge and understanding of unstructured, semi-structured, and structured healthcare data</li><li>
Strong familiarity with surgical and molecular pathology repotts, next-generation sequencing report, or clinician notes</li><li>
Demonstrated competency in oral and written communication</li><li>
Must be organized, attentive to detail and reliable, possess good judgment and a positive, friendly &amp; professional demeanor</li><li>

Translate PI/study needs through design and configuration of software capabailities to deliver desired outcomes and customization of use</li><li>
Modify software application design as needed to meet PI/study needs</li><li>
Design &amp; implement algorithms fpr data processing, and develop &amp; maintain bioinformatics databases</li><li>
Work closely and collaborate with researchers, computer scientists, and others involved to design experiments and interpret results</li><li>
Utilizes high performance computing assets and large data bases (big data)</li><li>
Analyses of problems to develop integrated solutions involving computer hardware and software</li><li>
Applies theoretical expertise and innovation to create or apply new technology, such as adapting principles for applying computers to new uses</li><li>
