Summary of Role:

The Senior Counsel, Patents, acts as a strategic legal advisor to The Hershey Company, with primary responsibility for protecting and leveraging the organization&rsquo;s patent portfolio. This role leads efforts to identify, secure, and defend intellectual property related to product innovation, process improvement, and emerging technologies&mdash;including AI and digital solutions&mdash;while collaborating closely with R&amp;D, innovation, and business units. The Senior Counsel ensures legal compliance, manages patent-related agreements and disputes, and supports business growth through proactive risk management and stakeholder education. 


Role Responsibilities:
<ul>
<li>Lead the identification, protection, prosecution, and maintenance of patentable inventions across food products, packaging, manufacturing processes, and emerging technologies.</li>
<li>Conduct patent landscape analyses, freedom-to-operate reviews, and competitive intelligence to guide innovation and mitigate risk.</li>
<li>Draft, review, and negotiate patent-related agreements, including technology transfer, joint development, research collaboration, and IP licensing contracts.</li>
<li>Manage patent disputes, oppositions, and litigation, coordinating with external counsel and regulatory authorities as needed.</li>
<li>Develop and deliver training programs for employees, ensuring compliance with global patent laws and company policies.</li>
<li>Direct management of a global patent portfolio, including oversight of budget and external counsel/vendor resources.</li>
<li>Influence on company-wide innovation and risk management strategies through cross-functional collaboration and legal guidance.</li></ul>

Summary: 


The Hershey Company Stuarts Draft plant is a Non-Union plant producing products such as Reese&rsquo;s Pieces, Reese Cups, Reese Shapes, Reese Bars, Mr. Goodbar, Mounds, Almond Joy, NutRageous, Oh Henry, FastBreak, Whatchamacallit, Baking Chips, etc. in a high-speed complex environment. 


The primary role and responsibility of the Sr Control Systems Specialist or Controls Systems Specialist is to provide technical support to ensure that production lines and plant processes are operational. 


The Sr Control Systems Specialist or Controls Systems Specialist will provide technical expertise to troubleshoot, repair and maintain process instrumentation, PLC&rsquo;s, VFD&rsquo;s, servos, control systems and computers. 


This position will primarily be assigned to 1st shift and work other shifts as necessary to support plant operations, shutdowns, and projects. The Control System Specialist will be on call every 5th week for after-hours support and to provide 24-hour weekend coverage at minimum. 


Responsibilities: 

<ul>
<li>Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair plant controls systems, PLC&rsquo;s, motion controllers, HMIs, and electrical systems.</li>
<li>Read and interpret drawings, diagrams, manuals, schematics, and blueprints in order to maintain and improve equipment uptime.</li>
<li>Setup, configure, program, modify and improve PLC programs.</li>
<li>Provide 2nd level technical support to plant electricians and technicians.</li>
<li>Provide mentoring to maintenance, engineering, and manufacturing personnel on new and/or improved technologies.</li>
<li>Coordinate with equipment vendors, engineering personnel, manufacturing supervision and production employees in the solution, design, and implementation efforts.</li>
<li>Provide technical analyses (cost estimates, feasibility, specifications, interpretation of requirements), develop alternatives and prepare recommendations for capital solutions to problems.</li>
<li>Assist with power distribution switchgear maintenance and switching.</li>
<li>Diagnose and repair or replace malfunctioning apparatus and components, such as transformers, circuit breakers, fuses, motors, generators, and fixtures.</li>
<li>Maintains continuity among work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and participating in daily pass down discussions.</li>
<li>Perform advanced troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of plant electrical systems.</li>
<li>Participate in the maintenance and upkeep of the Process Control Network security procedures and policies.</li>
<li>Implement incremental improvement ideas to improve quality, reliability, uptime, and cost.</li>
<li>Support and manage capital projects to eliminate controls obsolescence issues and improve plant quality, reliability, and uptime.</li>
<li>Develop and provide technical training for Technical Assurance personnel.</li></ul> 


Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:

<li>Experience with processing and packaging equipment, controls systems, instrumentation, and computers</li>
<li>Knowledge of electrical power distribution including panelboards, motor control centers, busways, substations and MV switchgear</li>

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

<li>Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics or a related technical degree preferred.</li>
<li>Minimum 3 years of experience (Control Systems Specialist) or minimum 5 years work experience (Sr. Controls System Specialist) in engineering, maintenance or a related field required.</li>
<li>Advanced programming experience with Allen Bradley PLC&rsquo;s is required.</li></ul>

Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Sensory Innovation and working at The Hershey Company&rsquo;s Technical Center, the Senior Research Scientist position provides project leadership on multiple medium complexity initiatives and/or beginning to lead a higher complexity initiative with support. Complexity of a workstream can be increased through technical complexity, manufacturing complexity, speed to market, quantity of projects and cross-functional support. For the Sensory professional, complexity is driven by the learning plan and types of applied research methods. Examples of complex studies include Drivers of Liking, consumer-based specifications, large DOE studies, a combination of multiple methods or multiple waves of research. A successful candidate is adept at demonstrating and applying technical knowledge and expertise (sensory &amp; consumer research, statistics and data visualization). Ability to develop and share technical expertise within functional area and cross functionally within the organization, strong problem-solving skills &amp; the ability to think critically is important to this role. The successful candidate is proficient at communicating complex or technical subject matter written and verbally to different audiences at different levels within the organization.
