The Fire and Stewardship Crew Member (FSCM) participates in prescribed fire operations which include ignition, control, post ignition operations, suppression, monitoring, and other tasks as assigned. The FSCM will participate in preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, community health monitoring and other tasks. This FSCM will assist in ecological stewardship practices such as woody encroachment reduction, invasive species control, and other preserve maintenance tasks. <div><h3 class="jobSectionHeader">We&rsquo;re Looking for You:
</h3></div><div>FSCMs should come with experience or capability to perform basic maintenance on hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and trailers. FSCMs will perform preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire, so being prepared for a flexible work schedule is necessary. Members will be expected to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Crew members will work in a high stress team environment under close supervision. They should have conflict resolution and problem-solving skills. FSCMs should be prepared for crew housing, where crew members will be in close proximity both during and after work hours. The Fire and Stewardship Crew Member (FSCM) will be based out of Dunn Ranch Prairie in Hatfield, MO . FSCMs will be expected to travel statewide on occasion. Housing is provided. Camping may be necessary on occasion for short durations. Start date for FSCMs will be May 1, 2026 and end date will be November 20, 2026 .

Fire and Stewardship Crew Member

This may include participation in fire &amp; stewardship activities in partnership with other non-profits and local, state, and federal agencies.

</h3></div><div>The Crew Leader will be part of the Osage Plains Fire &amp; Stewardship Team. This role with work with Fire &amp; Stewardship Crew Members in the field with direction given by the Fire &amp; Stewardship Coordinator in their respective region.

Fire and Stewardship Crew Leader

Over the past 60 years The Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin has protected more than 236,000 acres of Wisconsin&rsquo;s forests, waters, wetlands, and prairies. Today we own and manage over 30,500 acres in Wisconsin, including the Border Lakes of the Northwoods, the Door Peninsula of northeastern Wisconsin, and the Baraboo Hills, Military ridge Prairie Heritage Area, and Mukwonago River Watershed in southern Wisconsin among others. As part of a four-person team, the Burn Crew Member is based out of our Baraboo Hills Project in Baraboo, WI and works across the diverse landscapes of Wisconsin to support the implementation of prescribed fire and other priority land management. The Burn Crew Member will also participate in wildland fire operations throughout the United States for up to 16 weeks annually. 
Wildland and prescribed fire operations include preparing fire lines, ignition, control, suppression, mop-up, post burn monitoring, equipment maintenance, and other tasks as assigned. Land management tasks include timber stand improvement, invasive species management through chemical and manual control, trail maintenance, species monitoring and mapping, and property monitoring among others. In addition, the Burn Crew Member shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local communities where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in wildland fire suppression or prescribed fire implementation in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state and federal agencies, either as a TNC employee, or as a short-term employee of the partner entity (such as an administratively determined, short term federal employee). The Burn Crew Member position may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

As a Burn Crew Member, you&rsquo;ll be supervised and directed by the Wisconsin Burn Crew Manager and will work cooperatively with other crew members, TNC Staff, volunteers, and partners to manage preserve areas and implement prescribed fire operations. As part of a mobile fire crew, you will frequently travel throughout Wisconsin (up to 80% time) and will travel up to 16 weeks annually throughout the United States. Occasional camping may be required. Housing is not provided, however TNC covers all expenses and lodging incurred during any travel. TNC strongly supports the professional development of our prescribed fire staff through travel and training to obtain or maintain National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) qualifications. This may be done through assignments with TNC and/or other agencies, as well as through Prescribed Fire Learning Exchanges (TREX) and other partnership trainings such as the National Interagency Prescribed Fire Training Center. 
The Burn Crew Member Position works 35-40 hours per week; however, overtime is expected during our prescribed burn season and during out-of-state travel assignments. The starting rate for this position is $18.00-$20.00/hour based on experience. Our Burn Crew Member position is a full-time, fully benefitted position that has been funded through December 31, 2030, with the potential to be extended beyond that date.

Southern Wisconsin Burn Crew Member

<div><div><h3 class="jobSectionHeader">What We Can Achieve Together:
</h3>The Prescribed Fire Manager provides support to the Alabama/Mississippi/Louisiana BU for fire management activities related to prescribed fires, wildfires, fire training and fire qualifications (See TNC&rsquo;s Fire Management Manual). With prescribed burn qualifications including National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Prescribed Fire Manager (RXMG) and Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2), the position reviews and approves fire management plans, prescribed burn plans, and contractor qualifications. The Prescribed Fire Manager mentors, supports, evaluates, certifies, and designates burn bosses. They provide Ignition Authorizations for Conservancy prescribed burns. They ensure Conservancy fire management requirements and guidelines are met or exceeded and keep senior leadership in their area informed of fire program activities, needs, risks and accomplishments. The Prescribed Fire Manager modifies or exempts specific fire management guidelines as defined in the Fire Management Manual, with written justification.
The Prescribed Fire Manager ensures that fire personnel qualification records are annually collected for and maintained in the IQCS database. They ensure timely notifications are made for all reportable fire incidents and annual reporting of the program's fire management activities. They review proposed contracts and agreements related to fire management activities and provide comments to TNC legal counsel. The Prescribed Fire Manager oversees internal reviews and designs and implements fire safety standards specific to the programs overseen, provided that those standards meet or exceed organizational standards, and may suspend fire management program operations if there is clear evidence of safety violations, serious risk of potential safety violations, or non-compliance with Conservancy SOPs, requirements, or guidelines.
As part of the incumbent&rsquo;s ongoing professional development, they will keep abreast of internal and external developments in the field of wildland fire management to maintain excellence in their program. Additionally, they shall build strong partnerships with public and private partners to further the goals of the Conservancy in their area of responsibility, including delivery of or assisting with fire management training at local, regional, and national levels, participating in wildland fire suppression activities with partners as TNC employee or as a volunteer or short-term employee of the partner entity.
Attendance at a Conservancy Fire Manager's Workshop is strongly recommended.
RESPONSIBILITIES &amp; SCOPE
<ul><li>Oversees professional staff with responsibility for fire training, implementation and career development.

</h3></div><ul><li>Bachelor&rsquo;s degree and at least 4 years&rsquo; experience in fire management or natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
</li><li>Must meet NWCG qualifications for RXB2 (Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2), including coursework and experience requirements. See the T NC&rsquo;s Fire Management Manual for a full explanation of qualification requirements.
</li><li>Experience in developing strategies.
</li><li>Experience in reviewing prescribed burn unit plans and site fire management plans.
</li><li>Experience in training and curriculum design.
</li><li>Supervisory experience.
</li><li>Experience leading effectively in stressful situations.
</li><li>Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Browsers.
</li><li>Experience communicating effectively with internal colleagues, partners, and or media.
</li><li>Must achieve physical fitness standards as set by the local Fire Manager and TNC Fire Management Manual.
</li><li>Fire Manager Qualification must be approved and designated in writing by the Conservancy Fire Management Coordinator.

</h3><ul><li><h3 class="jobSectionHeader">Ability and willingness to achieve NWCG Prescribed Fire Manager (RXMG) qualification.
</h3></li><li>Familiar with the fuel types and geography for which fire management activities occur and must have a demonstrated ability to evaluate people, programs, and potential problems, and to build partnerships.
</li><li>Multi-lingual skills and multicultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
</li><li>Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
</li><li>Ability and willingness to communicate and work closely with burn bosses, land managers and scientists to develop strategies and meet conservation and fire management objectives.
</li><li>Knowledge of ecological land management principles.
</li><li>Familiarity with fire effects and fire behavior in local fuel types.
</li><li>Knowledge of current trends and practices in fire management, conservation, land management and natural resource preservation.
</li><li>Knowledge of Conservancy fire management Standard Operating Procedure, requirements, and guidelines.
</li><li>Completing tasks independently and with respect to timeline(s).
</li><li>Excellent communication skills via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
</li></ul>This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC&rsquo;s Auto Safety Program . </h3></div>The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $75,000 - $115,000. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate&rsquo;s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
