The Patient Care Tech must have excellent communication skills. It is imperative that they are able to communicate effectively using tact and sensitivity. It is important to have a strong knowledge of emergency procedures and be able to stay calm in stressful situations. </b><ul><li>Performs all duties both clinical and non-clinical to prepare for admission, transfers and discharges including but not limited to securing IV pump, zeroing bed and updating white board with current information.
</li><li>Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by correctly: cleaning equipment, using infection control techniques, reporting damaged/malfunctioning equipment, changing out sharps containers, keeping hallways clear, and wiping down desk/nurses station. Upon discharge, clean white board, strip bed, remove equipment/supplies and properly store them.
</li><li>Maintains standards of care when completing and documenting daily duties, such as: hygiene, vital signs, nutritional assistance, weight/height, ambulation, fingerstick blood sugar and measuring intake and output. Accurately collects/labels all specimens, and transports to Lab, as indicated.
</li><li>Makes rounds on patients and answer call lights immediately, using excellent customer service techniques. Promptly reports any unusual incidents and/or any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient to the appropriate staff person maintaining confidentiality.

The University of Kansas Health System Phlebotomist is a position within the clinical laboratory that is responsible for interpreting orders for lab work from providers within The University of Kansas Health System which are entered in the Hospital Information System and orders from outside providers that are presented as a manual order. The Phlebotomist must be able to interpret these orders and accurately identify the correct tube type for each test.
<br>
<br>
The Phlebotomist follows regulatory, accreditation, safety and hospital standards, policies and procedures, and performs positive patient identification for each patient prior to blood draw and confirming patient identification after labeling the tubes. In the ambulatory setting, the Phlebotomist presents labeled tubes to the patient to confirm proper labeling. In the in-patient setting, the Phlebotomist matches the labeled tubes with the patient's wristband.

The Phlebotomist understands the importance of all pre-analytical variables such as positive patient identification, correct tube types, specimen conditions and integrity and how they affect laboratory results, and participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities. The Phlebotomist releases orders out of the Hospital Information System (HIS) and receives specimens in the Laboratory Information System (LIS); and processes specimens to include centrifugation, aliquoting urine and pouring off plasma or serum if necessary for testing.

The Phlebotomist is considered the &quot;face&quot; of the clinical laboratory and is expected to represent the laboratory and themselves in a professional, respectful and courteous manner at all times. The Phlebotomist follows AIDET guidelines for customer service and patient satisfaction.

<br>
Additionally, the Phlebotomist working in the ambulatory setting must prepare specimens for transport by scanning the bar-coded sample onto a LIS packing list. The Phlebotomist must be able to troubleshoot difficult orders and assist with troubleshooting missing specimens when indicated. This position performs some data entry functions, manages requisitions and answers telephones to assist Laboratory customers. The Phlebotomist must be patient focused and capable of multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment.
<p></p><p><b>Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
</b></p><ul><li>Performs blood draws by venipuncture according to standard protocol, ensuring patient safety and quality specimen collection.
</li><li>Performs specimen collection using appropriate techniques and adhering to requirements. Provides patients and/or care providers with instructions and necessary materials for specimen collection
</li><li>Provides immediate patient care if patient exhibits sign of a post-venipuncture reaction, typically vaso-vagal.
</li><li>Pro-actively assesses patient presentation and escorts patient to draw room with recliner if patient is an adolescent or young adult or states that they typically have a reaction to having their blood drawn.
</li><li>Performs data entry in applicable information systems in compliance with departmental and organizational policies
</li><li>Demonstrates knowledge of specimen collection techniques and requirements.
</li><li>Ensures proper container type, centrifugation, and transport conditions for specimens. Able to determine appropriateness of specimens for add-on testing.
</li><li>Releases orders on ambulatory health system patients with orders in HIS
</li><li>Receives samples in LIS, prints bar code labels and affixes labels to specimens. Enters outside orders in LIS when copy of outside order is scanned into HIS.
</li><li>Consults Phlebotomy Coordinator, Supervisor or Lab Leadership when appropriate if situation requires assistance
</li><li>Provides assistance to nursing staff when requested.
</li><li>Performs specimen processing duties such as aliquoting urine and separating blood samples when required for testing.
</li><li>Understands pre-analytical variables that can impact test results: Container Type, Time, Temperature, Centrifugation, labeling. Able to determine appropriateness of specimens for addon testing
</li><li>Responds to telephone inquiries and provides customer service to the end caller by addressing their needs and troubleshooting.

</b></h2>The Patient Scheduling Associate provides the highest level of customer service as they assist patients with routine scheduling of new and follow-up appointments requested by patients and providers and may also contact patients who have received a specialty referral. The Patient Scheduling Associate also assists patients with insurance registration with The University of Kansas Health System's outpatient clinics. This work may be done away from the front desk of a clinical area and could include work in a call center setting taking large volumes of patient phone calls. (Employees in the call center setting may have the opportunity to work remotely from home after demonstrating consistent competency with job duties.) In the clinical location, this role is responsible for front desk operations including greeting and checking in customers and visitors, copay collection, completing MyChart and EMR (Electronic Medical Record) appointment requests, processing external medical records and helping the physician care team prepare for daily patient appointments.

</b></p><ul><li><p>Position responds to a high-volume of incoming telephone calls. Answers phone calls in a timely manner; provides complete and accurate exam related information to the patient regarding prep and other exam related notes; keeps work area organized and scheduling information readily available; maintains productivity within benchmark levels. Works to achieve a coordinated patient itinerary sometimes consisting of multiple appointments.
</p></li><li><p>Educates patients on providing medical records and other medical documentation needed for TUKHS appointments. Verifies patient demographics and insurance information and verification, completing the Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire (MSPQ), scanning document preparation, updating documentation and processing of referrals/order/appointment requests. Scheduler maintains discretion and protects patient confidentiality and privacy. Secures patient signatures for consent and financial forms. Familiarity with insurance coverage types (HMO, PPO, VA, Medicare). Identifies insurance plans and specific procedures which need to be pre-approved. Pre-certifies required tests and procedures. Preauthorization of clinic specific visits and procedures as needed.
</p></li><li><p>Pre-Visit Scheduling Schedule internal and external incoming department referrals. Complete order entry using hospital information system or manual order forms (test requisitions) including cancellation or modification of orders as required. Review all clinic orders for date, time, signature, and pagers. Verifies referring physician orders against scheduled appointments for accuracy.
</p></li><li><p>Supports both front desk and scheduling (telephone and MyChart) workflows. May assist patient with MyChart activation and support, including how to complete check-in online prior to the appointment. Responsible for supporting patient through self-check-in utilizing MyChart and the EMR. Ensure proper front desk coverage until last patient is dismissed from the clinic and any follow-up visits are scheduled. Responsible for outpatient clinic direct rooming

</p></li><li><p>Responsible for collecting all point of service collections due per the EMR generated patient estimate including copay, co-insurance, and deductibles. Follows and completes all standard registration documentation and scanning process in the Health System EMR. Efficiently navigates medical records and ensure patient information is up-to-date and accurately entered in the correct location.
</p></li><li><p>Effectively communicates Health System Policies to patients and patient advocates. Uses reference documents and online knowledge base tools to clearly articulate accurate information regarding SHC services.

</b></p><ul><li>Performs all duties both clinical and non-clinical to prepare for admission, transfers and discharges including securing IV pump, zeroing bed and updating white board with current information.
</li><li>Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by correctly: cleaning equipment, using infection control techniques, reporting damaged/malfunctioning equipment, changing out sharps containers, keeping hallways clear, and wiping down desk/nurses station. Upon discharge, clean white board, strip bed, remove equipment/supplies and properly store them.
</li><li>Maintains standards of care when completing and documenting daily duties, such as: hygiene, vital signs, nutritional assistance, weight/height, ambulation, fingerstick blood sugar and measuring intake and output. Accurately collects/labels all specimens, and transports to Lab, as indicated.
</li><li>Makes rounds on patients and answer call lights immediately, using excellent customer service techniques. Promptly reports any unusual incidents and/or any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient to the appropriate staff person maintaining confidentiality.
</li><li>Introduces self to patient and family upon arrival to room. Communicates appropriate information to nurse and/or shift coordinator in a timely manner, i.e., physician phone calls, stat orders, critical results, patient needs, etc.
</li><li>Uses technology appropriately, whether entering data or securing data from the computer system. Accurately enters orders and charges into the computer system as appropriate.

</b></h2>The University of Kansas Health System Phlebotomist is a position within the clinical laboratory that is responsible for interpreting orders for lab work from providers within The University of Kansas Health System which are entered in the Hospital Information System and orders from outside providers that are presented as a manual order. The Phlebotomist must be able to interpret these orders and accurately identify the correct tube type for each test.

The Phlebotomist follows regulatory, accreditation, safety and hospital standards, policies and procedures, and performs positive patient identification for each patient prior to blood draw and confirming patient identification after labeling the tubes. In the ambulatory setting, the Phlebotomist presents labeled tubes to the patient to confirm proper labeling. In the in-patient setting, the Phlebotomist matches the labeled tubes with the patient's wristband.
