<p>Functional Coatings, Films and Adhesives is a program at TNO/ Brightlands Materials Center, focusing on the development of innovative materials and coatings that contribute to reducing the buildings energy consumption. The topics studied in the group are rather broad (thermochromic materials, recycling of critical raw materials, induction heating&hellip;). For this internship we are looking for an intern that would integrate a team of scientist and researchers and would work on one of our projects involving latex synthesis and/or the recycling of a spent catalyst.</p>
<h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>What will be your role?</b></h2>
<p>You will participate in a team of scientists and research engineers at Brightlands Materials Center at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus. Your internship will focus about recycling a vanadium based waste to transform it into V2O5; a precursor used to fabricate our thermochromic window coatings. Your tasks will involve the optimization of the multi step synthesis for which every step and its impact on the yield needs to be better understood as well as and characterization of the final product via the various analytical instruments available in the laboratory. Your work will also involve data analysis and evaluation. You will present progress and planning on a weekly basis to your supervisor and to the group.</p>
<h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>What we expect from you</b></h2>
<p>We are looking for students (BSc or MSc) with a background in chemistry , that have a hands-on mentality. Experience with working in a laboratory environment is required. Affinity with chemical synthesis is required. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are expected. The internship period should last at least 4 months<i>.</i></p>

<p>As a Machine Learning Engineer, you contribute to the research, development, and implementation of machine learning solutions that have direct impact on vital infrastructures. You work alongside top experts in AI, distributed systems, and software engineering to develop innovative applications that bridge fundamental research and practical implementation. <p>Your home base is the research group Intelligent Cyber-physical Systems Engineering (ICSE). <p>As a Machine Learning Engineer, you are involved in the full lifecycle of ML solutions: from research and experimentation to building and deploying robust AI systems. Your responsibilities include, among other things:</p>

Entry-level Machine Learning Engineer

<div><div><div><div><div><div><h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Over deze vacature</b></h2>
<p>Wereldwijd bedreigen conflicten, criminaliteit en ondermijnende activiteiten onze veiligheid. Om weerstand te bieden tegen deze dreigingen, werkt TNO aan innovatief onderzoek en de toepassing daarvan bij onze veiligheidspartners. Zo ondersteunen wij onder andere het Ministerie van Defensie en de Politie bij het nemen van de beste ge&iuml;nformeerde beslissingen en het uitvoeren van (semi-)geautomatiseerde acties waarop zij kunnen vertrouwen.</p>
<p>Dat doen we door toegepast onderzoek te doen, innovatieve idee&euml;n te bedenken en deze uit te werken. Bijvoorbeeld voor de inzet van inlichtingen voor Defensie, het ontwikkelen van modellen voor decision support bij het OM, en het inzetten van NLP voor de analyse van criminele berichten. Je komt in deze functie te werken bij de researchgroep Intelligence &amp; Decision Support. Dit gedreven team van ongeveer 40 collega&rsquo;s bestaat uit diverse expertises en achtergronden en valt binnen de unit Defence, Safety &amp; Security.</p>
<h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Wat ga je doen?</b></h2>
<p>Als scientist werk je mee aan onderzoeksprojecten rond LLM&rsquo;s en agentic AI voor beslisondersteuning bij partners in het defensie- en veiligheidsdomein. In multidisciplinaire teams werk je aan verschillende onderzoeksvragen mee, waarbij je meedenkt over de aanpak en de methodologie om die vragen te beantwoorden. Gebaseerd op wetenschappelijk onderzoek, bestaande methodologie&euml;n en best practices werk je met je teams de concepten uit, waarbij modelleren en programmeren rondom LLM&rsquo;s essenti&euml;le onderdelen zijn van je werkzaamheden. Het resultaat kan bijvoorbeeld een proof of concept zijn, waarbij jij altijd oog houdt voor de impact van de tools die je ontwikkelt op de dagelijkse praktijk van onze partners. Je communiceert de projectresultaten aan onze partners en bent een waardevolle gesprekspartner voor collega&rsquo;s.</p>
<p>Voorbeelden van projecten zijn: het ontwikkelen van een LLM concept voor beslisondersteuning bij de Politie, het maken van een proof of concept voor de planning van een missie bij defensie, het bijdragen aan een Nederlandse LLM, en het tastbaar maken van de haalbaarheid van agentic AI bij veiligheidspartners.</p>
<p>Bij TNO is er veel ruimte om jezelf te verdiepen in nieuwe AI-tools, conferentiebezoek en nieuwe onderzoeksrichtingen. Ook zijn er mogelijkheden om interne researchlijnen op te zetten en bij te dragen aan projectacquisitie en proposals voor samenwerkingen. Naast de projecten kun je ook diverse nevenactiviteiten oppakken, passend bij je interesses en ontwikkelrichting, zoals het co&ouml;rdineren van de stages in de afdeling, het organiseren van inhoudelijke of sociale events en het mentoren van nieuwe collega&rsquo;s.</p>
<h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Wat wij van jou verwachten</b></h2>
<p>Je bent gedreven om met jouw werk bij te dragen aan het militaire- en veiligheidsdomein en wil hierover graag meer leren, zodat je werk steeds beter aansluit op de behoeften van de partners. Je kunt daarbij goed omgaan met gevoelige informatie en je vindt het interessant om bijvoorbeeld mee te gaan op oefening of periode bij een partner op locatie te werken om zo waardevolle domeinkennis op te bouwen. Met je nieuwsgierigheid ga je graag op zoek naar de informatie die je nodig hebt voor je opdrachten. Je bent analytisch sterk en kunt meedenken over het vertalen van wetenschap naar praktijk. Het gaat je goed af om in meerdere projecten en teams tegelijk te werken en hiertussen te schakelen. Je houdt van samenwerken en zet hierbij jouw communicatieve vaardigheden in, terwijl je je werk autonoom kunt plannen en niet schroomt om voorstellen in te brengen en het voortouw te nemen. Daarmee ben je ook goed in staat om conclusies te presenteren in tekst, presentaties, schema's en datavisualisaties maar ook om bijvoorbeeld expert workshops te faciliteren.</p>
<p>Je vindt het geweldig om te werken met AI en in het bijzonder LLM&rsquo;s, waarin je jezelf de komende jaren graag steeds verder bekwaamt. Denk naast prompt engineering aan fine tuning, uitlegbaarheid, robuustheid, adversarial attacks en andere onderwerpen om tot goede systemen te komen. Je gaat hiermee graag de diepte in door bijvoorbeeld kleinere modellen te finetunen en specialistische toepassingen uit te werken. Verder ben je leergierig; jij ontwikkelt jezelf graag en komt graag met nieuwe informatie en taken in aanraking. Met jouw kennis help je andere collega's graag verder en je bent een teamspeler.</p>
<p>Wat je verder meebrengt:</p>
<ul><li>Een academische master of PhD in de richting van bijvoorbeeld artificial intelligence, toegepaste wiskunde, data science of operations research.
</li><li>Uitstekende communicatieve vaardigheden in het Nederlands en Engels, zowel mondeling als schriftelijk.
</li><li>Ruime programmeerervaring in Python (en eventueel andere nuttige talen).
</li><li>Ervaring met het opzetten van veelvoorkomende LLM-workflows, zoals RAG-pipelines, fine-tuning/LoRA en modeladaptatie is een must.

Scientist LLM's en agentic AI

<p>Conflicts, crime, and subversive activities threaten our security worldwide. To counter these threats, TNO conducts innovative research and works on applying these insights with our security partners. In doing so, we support organizations such as the Ministry of Defence and the Police in making the best-informed decisions and carrying out (semi-)automated actions they can rely on.</p>
<p>We do this by conducting applied research, generating innovative ideas, and translating them into practical solutions. For example, in the use of intelligence for Defence, the development of decision support models for the Public Prosecution Service, and the application of NLP to analyze criminal communications. In this role, you will join the Intelligence &amp; Decision Support research group. This driven team of around 40 colleagues brings together a wide range of expertise and backgrounds and is part of the Defence, Safety &amp; Security unit.</p>
<h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>What will be your role?</b></h2>
<p>As a scientist, you contribute to research projects focused on LLMs and agentic AI for decision support within the defence and security domain. Working in multidisciplinary teams, you engage with various research questions, helping to shape the approach and methodology needed to answer them. Based on scientific research, existing methodologies, and best practices, you and your team develop concepts, with modelling and programming around LLMs forming an essential part of your work. The result may, for example, be a proof of concept, where you consistently keep in mind the impact of the tools you develop on the daily operations of our partners. <p>The Acoustics and Underwater Warfare division brings together acoustic expertise and mainly works for the Royal Netherlands Navy. The Underwater Operations &amp; Seabed Security department focuses on research into autonomous underwater systems, for example for mine detection using drones, anti-submarine warfare and protection of critical infrastructure. We develop advanced acoustic sensors and data processing for situational awareness, and model performance against underwater threats under different conditions.</p>
