The Town of Lancaster is seeking a part-time Deputy Town Attorney/Deputy Town Prosecutor for a 1-year term January 2026- December 2026. The work involves assisting the town attorney in rendering legal counsel to work in this class is of a highly professional level calling for the exercise of independent judgment. The employee in this class is responsible for answering many questions on civil law affecting the operation of business and organization under the general direction of the town attorney. May have direct supervision over a small legal staff; does related work as required.Duties: &middot; Provide general counsel to the Town Board, Planning Board, Zoning Board, and other officials as the Deputy Town Attorney.&middot; Act as Town Prosecutor for the justice court.&middot; Investigates the law and renders opinions to the supervisor and Town Board and other departmental authorities.&middot; Prepares pleadings, appeals, resolutions, notices, contracts and other legal papers and documents.&middot; Examine legal papers served on or filed with Town departments and officials.&middot; Attends meetings of the Town Board and advises the Board on legal problems.&middot; Appear in court to represent the town whenever it is necessary to do so.&middot; Collects back taxes by correspondence, in person, and when necessary, by legal action&middot; Answers correspondence and make necessary reports.Suggested Qualifications: &middot; Candidate must be admitted to practice law in New York for at least one (1) year.&middot; Strong background and experience with municipal law.&middot; Familiar with NYS Penal Code, Vehicle &amp; Traffic Law and the Town of Lancaster Code&middot; Ties to the local community.&middot; Experience practicing in the justice courtsAvailability - must be available to attend the following meetings: &middot; Zoning Board: 2nd Thursday of each month&middot; Planning Board meetings on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month.&middot; Attend Town Board meetings &amp; Work Sessions on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month.Salary: $21,144/ annuallyCandidates should submit responses to: Jennifer Strong, Town Attorney21 Central Ave.Lancaster, NY 14086JStrong@lancasterny.govYou may also call (716) 684-3342 with any questions.Job Type: Part-timePay: From $21,144.00 per yearWork Location: In person
