Background
In September 2022 the University of Birmingham opened its new branch campus in Dubai and we are seeking to appoint Teaching Fellows in English for Academic Purposes to join our expanding team on a fixed term contract.
The teaching is research-informed and staff are encouraged to take part in relevant conferences and CPD training sessions. This fixed term post represents an excellent opportunity to join an ambitious World Top 100 University as we continue to grow our long-term strategic mission in Dubai, the UAE and the wider region. The fixed-term post begins in October 2025 and finishes in July 2025 (9 months).
Role Summary
The post holder will be expected to teach English for Academic Purposes across a range of programmes or modules including, Foundation EAP modules, Academic English in-sessional courses and Pre-sessional English which are delivered in collaboration with the Colleges and Birmingham International Academy. BIA sits within Academic Services and has a strong international profile.
The post holder will be expected to teach on average 18 hours per week (with reduction being given for administrative, managerial or other duties as directed and agreed) and conduct 1 to 1 tutorials. The post holder will be expected to teach for 39 weeks per year. S/he will teach across all programmes but may predominantly be attached to a specific programme for materials development or managerial purposes (specialist duties may include assessment development, teacher development, VLE development, quality systems and audits).
The post holder will also undertake other teaching related activities and any other relevant duties, as laid down by the BIA Operations and Development Director /EAP TNE Programme Manager.
Main Duties
<ul><li>To plan and prepare own teaching, including materials, handouts and use of VLE in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programmes.
</li><li>To prepare students with the English language and academic skills they will need for their chosen academic programme using research-informed teaching methodology.
</li><li>To deliver teaching flexibly where required within a classroom environment or remotely as required using the LMS and video conference technology.
</li><li>To contribute to the design of modules with other colleagues.
</li><li>Monitor students&rsquo; academic learning outcomes, track progress and benchmark achievement against set targets
</li><li>Supervise student projects, and generally assist students to improve their academic communications skills, develop relevant study skills and habits and transition socially and academically.
</li><li>Undertake a full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining of all summative assessment (subject to validation by academic supervisor), as well as to any progress checks, presentations and coursework implemented during the course.
</li><li>Provide pastoral care and academic advice in a prompt and effective manner.
</li><li>Provide cover for other teachers when necessary.
</li><li>Provide, where possible in advance, a lesson plan and materials for any lessons to be covered by a substitute teacher in the event of an unavoidable absence.
</li><li>Frequently update own subject expertise and complete all mandatory training as requested.
</li><li>Undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using feedback from management observations as well as student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes.
</li><li>Develop an approach to planning and developing own teaching through participation in Continuous Professional Development.
</li><li>Attend all staff meetings and contribute ideas for the improvement of the programme.
</li><li>Be conversant with and uphold the principles inherent in the core competencies of an EAP practitioner, as detailed in the TEAP competency framework, developed by BALEAP.
</li><li>Undertake management/administration arising from teaching.
</li><li>Contribute to knowledge transfer on own specialism that is of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader.
</li><li>Contribute to BIA teaching-related activities and teaching-related administration.

<ul><li>A Masters in a TEFL-related area and a CELTA or
</li><li>A diploma in English teaching/ PGCE with substantial TEFL component, or diploma-level qualifications as defined in section 4.2 of the British Council&rsquo;s Accreditation UK handbook https://www.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/k062_uk_accreditation_handbook_2019_final_v2.pdf (pp.34-36)
</li><li>Substantial experience and expertise in delivering EAP/ESAP at a UK Higher Education institution to UG and PG international students from a diverse range of backgrounds and an excellent teaching record
</li><li>A sound knowledge and understanding of pedagogic and academic issues in teaching EAP/ESP
</li><li>Experience of teaching English for Specific Academic Purposes (e.g. to students of Engineering, Law, etc).
</li><li>In-depth knowledge and understanding of the UK higher education system
</li><li>Excellent classroom performance
</li><li>Ability to design and deliver module materials and assessments successfully.
</li><li>Confidence and skills in using technology to deliver teaching online
</li><li>Clear and effective presentation skills.
</li><li>Experience of safeguarding the welfare of students.

The Student &amp; Programme Administration department provides a wide range of high-quality services to support all University of Birmingham Dubai students, staff, and academic colleagues in the delivery of our academic mission. This includes activities such as Welcome and Induction, Programme Administration, Visa and Immigration services, Information, Advice &amp; Guidance and Graduation. The department also oversees timetabling, examinations, and mobility liaison functions to ensure students receive an excellent and enriching experience.
Role Summary
The Examinations &amp; Timetabling Officer will be responsible for devising, implementing, and delivering activities that support the smooth operation of student lifecycle processes, particularly timetabling, examinations, and mobility services coordination (Student mobility support, and student exchange year support). The role holder will:
<ul><li>Lead on the production and publication of class and examination timetables within agreed deadlines.
</li><li>Coordinate examination logistics, including room allocations, invigilator scheduling, and assessment materials.
</li><li>Provide guidance and advice to students and staff on timetabling, examinations, and mobility processes.
</li><li>Act as the Dubai campus liaison for student mobility, ensuring integration of incoming and outgoing students.
</li><li>Support wider Student &amp; Programme Administration services during peak times such as Welcome, Graduation, and Registration.
</li></ul>This role requires flexibility, strong technical skills with university systems (e.g., Syllabus Plus and Semestry), and the ability to build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Main Duties
Timetabling
<ul><li>Develop, coordinate, and maintain teaching timetables in collaboration with Programme Administration and academic leads.
</li><li>Allocate teaching spaces efficiently, ensuring optimal utilization of campus facilities.
</li><li>Ensure timetable data is accurate in student systems, minimizing clashes and enabling smooth registration.
</li><li>Resolve timetable and registration issues, including monitoring class sizes, venue changes, and oversubscribed sessions.
</li><li>Provide advice and training to staff and students on timetable and registration processes.
</li></ul>Examinations
<ul><li>Lead on the production, coordination, and publication of examination timetables each semester.
</li><li>Manage examination logistics including paper production, secure storage, rooming, invigilator rostering, and alternative sittings.
</li><li>Ensure examinations are fair, transparent, and compliant with institutional and regulatory requirements.
</li><li>Provide training and supervision for staff during examination periods.
</li></ul>Room Booking
<ul><li>Process ad hoc room booking requests using the timetabling scheduling system.
</li><li>Provide user support for room bookings and liaise with stakeholders such as Security, Facilities Management, and the Events Bureau to maintain bookings.
</li><li>Build strong professional relationships to ensure accurate and timely room booking services.
</li></ul>Mobility Liaison
<ul><li>Act as the Dubai campus contact point for student mobility matters.
</li><li>Provide practical guidance to outgoing students on various implications related to their study abroad or exchange period, referring them to the Edgbaston teams for detailed mobility arrangements.
</li><li>Ensure that incoming mobility students are appropriately integrated into timetables and assessment schedules, and that any specific needs are communicated early to academic and administrative teams.
</li><li>Collaborate with the Edgbaston Go Global team to ensure consistency and data sharing.
</li><li>Maintain oversight of mobility student numbers to support capacity planning.
</li></ul>Cross-Functional Coordination &amp; Student Services Support
<ul><li>Work closely with Student Services to align immigration, enrolment, and academic scheduling requirements.
</li><li>Provide operational support for student lifecycle activities during quieter periods (e.g., registration, ID cards, graduation logistics).
</li><li>Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across timetabling, examinations, and mobility processes.
</li></ul>General

Essential Attributes:
<ul><li>Degree-level qualification with extensive relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
</li><li>Proficiency in university systems including timetabling, examinations, and student records (e.g., Syllabus Plus, Semestry).
</li><li>Proven experience in timetabling and examinations systems within Higher Education such as Syllabus Plus, Semestry, Scientia or similar timetabling software.
</li><li>Strong Organisational skills with the ability to manage workloads, prioritise, and meet deadlines under pressure.
</li><li>Excellent interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
</li><li>Knowledge of student administration policies, degree structures, and assessment practices.
</li><li>Commitment to customer service excellence and continuous improvement.
</li><li>Problem-solving skills and the ability to propose solutions.
</li><li>Demonstrated ability to work productively as part of a team.
