The Opportunity 
The AFRC is seeking to appoint an experienced Principal Engineer (Team Lead - Near Net Shape) to lead and manage the delivery of high value research and knowledge exchange programmes and develop the AFRC&rsquo;s Near Net Shape capability with a particular focus on novel metal based forming processes (e.g., incremental flow/shear forming, superplastic/hydro forming, HIP, solid state joining) with projects that have heavy elements of industrial impact and translational research. The postholder will lead on high value industrial funding proposals as the principal- or co-investigator and spearhead the developments of near net shape forming technologies for the AFRC. The post holder will be expected to work between the AFRC and its industrial partners and there will be a strong emphasis on knowledge exchange.

You will line manage and support a team of engineers, RAs and KE practitioners, providing technical leadership and guidance to colleagues. You will generate new knowledge exchange approaches and identify, adapt, devise and use appropriate methodologies and techniques for real-world impact. You will lead and develop internal and external networks of researchers and leading thinkers in the field to foster knowledge exchange collaborations, to identify and deliver common research/knowledge exchange objectives and to generate income. You will also lead the development of knowledge exchange activities by, for example, establishing knowledge exchange links with industry and influencing public policy and the professions. You will contribute to Centre, Institute, Faculty and/or University senior administrative and management functions, for example by convening or participating in relevant committees. You will contribute to the strategic development of the Centre through, for example, developing new knowledge exchange strategies and by anticipating and planning for new directions for yourself and knowledge exchange themes and you will engage in continuous professional development.

 The opportunity
 
 
 
 
 
 
 The Teaching Fellow will work as part of the Department&rsquo;s teaching and education team and will independently deliver and administer taught modules at all levels as well as supervise undergraduate projects, develop new teaching materials, and contribute to academic administration, recruitment, and internationalisation activities within the Department.
 
 
 
 
 
 We would love to hear from you if you have a good honours degree in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in an appropriate discipline. Sufficient depth of knowledge of the specialist areas is essential for the independent delivery of established UG teaching programmes and to enable contribution to programme development and scholarship activities.
 
 
 
 
 
 We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in engineering analysis and design, with strengths in mathematical/numerical modelling, and practical experience with CAD and FEA for design substantiation and interpretation of results, including in an educational setting. Teaching experience, excellent communication skills, the ability to work within a team environment, planning and organisational skills are all essential.

 The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is one of the largest and most successful civil and environmental engineering departments in the UK. The department was ranked 1st in Scotland and 3rd in the UK in the Guardian Subject Rankings 2025. We educate over 1,000 students, including over 600 undergraduates in Glasgow, nearly 300 at our partner university in Yunnan, China, 100 taught postgraduates and almost 100 registered research students. We have a strong commitment to widening access and inclusion while maintaining academic quality and providing an outstanding student experience.
 
 
 
 
 
 Civil and Environmental Engineering academics lead an active and growing portfolio of around &pound;20M worth of research projects, the main funders of this research are UK Research and Innovation (&pound;13.9M), National Institute for Health and Care Research (&pound;3M) and Industry (&pound;1.8M). We are a dynamic research-intensive department. Income from industry-funded research has increased year on year, and income from licensing, gains on sales of spinout/spin off investment, and consultancy has doubled over the last four years. We have 30 academic staff, 22 post-doctoral research staff and 66 PGR students.

 You will join the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at a formative stage in the development of the University of Strathclyde&rsquo;s Bahrain campus. This role will establish teaching provision and define academic culture on a new international campus, while working closely with and being supported by colleagues based in Glasgow.
 
 
 
 
 
 You will deliver undergraduate teaching on the BEng Hons Civil Engineering programme, with the delivery of modules aligned to key areas recognised in professional degree frameworks, supporting progression towards professional competency standards in disciplines such as:
