About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll be a core contributor to our platform modernization effort -understanding how our existing systems work, designing modern serverless replacements, and shipping new capabilities to production. You'll own meaningful technical challenges, collaborate closely with peers and a Staff-level technical lead, and make a visible impact on a critical, customer-facing platform. 
One thing that makes this role special: we use AI to do most of the coding. Your job isn't to type faster - it's to bring real engineering depth and direct the AI well. You'll frame the problems, guide the agents toward the right solutions, recognize when the output is genuinely good (and when it only looks good), and make sure everything we ship actually solves the business problem it was meant to solve. Your experience - especially in SQL Server and backend Node.js -is what turns fast AI output into reliable production software.

Key Responsibilities
<ul>
<li>Analyse and understand our existing systems to support the migration effort, and handle occasional maintenance and bugfixes.</li>
<li>Design and direct the implementation of serverless Node.js / TypeScript components to replace legacy modules -guiding AI agents through the build and rigorously verifying the results.</li>
<li>Migrate and optimise data from legacy SQL databases to modern storage solutions, ensuring the data -and the business rules behind it -survive the journey intact.</li>
<li>Build and maintain APIs, event-driven workflows, and integrations with external systems.</li>
<li>Participate actively in code and design reviews, raising the overall quality of the team's output -human-written and AI-generated alike.</li>
<li>Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product, QA, DevOps) to make sure we're solving the right problem and delivering with minimal production disruption.</li>
<li>Support and troubleshoot production issues across both legacy and new platforms during the transition.</li></ul> 


Qualifications

Required:
<ul>
<li>3+ years of software engineering experience with a strong backend focus.</li>
<li>Expert-level Microsoft SQL Server and T-SQL -query optimization, indexing, stored procedures, and complex schema design.</li>
<li>Strong backend development experience with Node.js and TypeScript.</li>
<li>Experience with legacy system modernization -you can discuss migration strategies and tradeoffs, and navigate systems where documentation is incomplete.</li>
<li>Experience with serverless architecture on a major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP); strong SQL Server expertise may offset limited cloud exposure.</li>
<li>Enthusiasm for AI-assisted development -you're excited to direct AI agents and use your expertise to keep their output correct and on-target.</li></ul> 


Preferred:

<li>Hands-on experience using AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor) in real workflows.</li>
<li>Familiarity with message queues and event-driven architectures (Kafka, SQS, EventBridge).</li>

As a Lead Software Engineer, you'll be a technical anchor on our modernization program -the most complex, highest-impact engineering initiative at Vimly. You'll drive architectural decisions, mentor senior engineers, and own end-to-end delivery of critical system components. You'll stay close to the work: leading design reviews, shaping what gets built, and being accountable for the quality and performance of what your team ships.

Key Responsibilities

<ul><li>Conduct deep analysis of existing systems to inform migration scope, sequencing, and risk -and verify that AI-assisted analysis is accurate before decisions are made on it.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Define data migration strategies - schema design, ETL patterns, data validation - for SQL workloads moving to modern storage solutions.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Build and maintain robust APIs, event-driven workflows (SQS, EventBridge, SNS), and integrations with external partners.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Drive technical excellence across the team: establish coding standards (for humans and AI alike), conduct design reviews, and champion automated testing.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Mentor and upskill Senior and Mid-level engineers -including how to work effectively with AI -and provide actionable feedback.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Collaborate with product, design, and QA to make sure what we deliver actually solves the business problem, with minimal disruption to production.</li></ul>

Qualifications

Required:
<ul><li>8+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a staff-level or principal/lead role.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Deep SQL expertise - query optimization, execution plans, indexing strategies, partitioning, and complex schema design.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Strong backend development in Node.js and TypeScript; comfort with modern async patterns, dependency injection, and testing.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Proven experience leading legacy system modernization -you can articulate migration strategies, tradeoffs, and rollback plans.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Experience with serverless architecture on AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, DynamoDB, RDS) or equivalent major cloud.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Track record of influencing technical direction beyond your immediate team.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Enthusiasm for AI-assisted development -you see AI as a force multiplier for your experience and have the judgment to direct it well.</li></ul> 
Preferred:
