Senior Data Platform Engineer

Reports to: VP of Corporate Finance &amp; Data

Location: Phoenix, AZ (Hybrid/On-site as required, remote option for the right candidate)

Why This Role Exists

Our data platform runs on a modern stack &mdash; Matillion, Snowflake, and GitLab &mdash; and the pipelines powering it need a dedicated owner. This role exists to take ETL development, orchestration, and Snowflake warehouse administration off the VP's plate and put them in the hands of someone who treats data infrastructure as a craft. Success looks like pipelines that run reliably, a Snowflake environment that is well-structured and cost-efficient, and a data layer that the rest of the analytics team can build on with confidence.

Key Responsibilities:
<ul><li>
Own the full ETL/ELT development lifecycle using Matillion &mdash; building, maintaining, and optimizing pipelines that move data from source systems into our Snowflake bronze and silver layers reliably and on schedule</li><li>
Take strategic ownership of our Snowflake environment &mdash; this is more than administration; we're at a maturity inflection point and need someone who will drive architecture decisions, enforce cost governance through resource monitors and warehouse right-sizing, establish performance standards, and evolve our bronze/silver/gold layer into a platform the business can depend on for years</li><li>
Manage pipeline orchestration and scheduling &mdash; ensuring jobs run in the right order, failures are caught early, and alerting is in place so issues surface to the right people before the business notices</li><li>
Own data quality monitoring across ingestion and transformation layers &mdash; implementing checks, validation logic, and remediation workflows that give downstream consumers confidence in what they're working with</li><li>
Collaborate with the Senior BI Developer &amp; Analytics Engineer on gold layer structure and transformation logic &mdash; your pipelines feed their reporting layer, so alignment on data contracts, naming conventions, and schema evolution is a shared responsibility</li><li>
Maintain and enforce source control discipline using GitLab &mdash; all pipeline and transformation code is version-controlled, peer-reviewed, and deployed through a repeatable process</li><li>
Manage integrations with source systems &mdash; working across internal operational platforms, financial systems, and third-party data sources to ensure ingestion is stable, documented, and recoverable</li><li>
Document infrastructure, pipeline logic, and data lineage at a standard that makes the platform understandable to both technical and non-technical stakeholders &mdash; partnering with the Senior BI Developer on Secoda to keep the catalog current</li><li>
Proactively identify and remediate technical debt in the pipeline and warehouse layer &mdash; this platform was built to move fast; part of this role is making it built to last</li><li>
Lead our exploration of Snowflake Cortex &mdash; as an emerging ownership area, you'll evaluate and build out ML and LLM capabilities natively within Snowflake, including Cortex functions for text analysis, classification, anomaly detection, and embedding-based workflows; this is greenfield territory and you'll have real influence over how we develop it</li><li>
Manage your work in agile scrum using Jira &mdash; maintaining a well-groomed backlog, participating in sprint planning and retrospectives, and keeping your work visible and prioritized without needing to be chased</li><li>
Contribute to AI/ML infrastructure as a broader growth area &mdash; beyond Cortex, there is scope to build data foundations that support model training, feature engineering, and automated analytical workflows as the platform matures</li></ul>

Required Qualifications:
<ul><li>
3+ years of hands-on data engineering experience, with demonstrated ownership of production ETL pipelines and a cloud data warehouse environment</li><li>
Proficiency with Matillion or a comparable ETL/ELT tool (Fivetran, Airbyte, Informatica, Talend) &mdash; we use Matillion and prefer candidates who know it, but strong experience with another enterprise-grade tool and the ability to ramp quickly is acceptable</li><li>
Strong Snowflake administration experience &mdash; virtual warehouses, resource monitors, RBAC, data clustering, and a practical understanding of how to keep a Snowflake environment performant and cost-controlled; bonus if you've been the person who matured a Snowflake environment from functional to optimized, rather than just inherited a well-run one</li><li>
Strong SQL proficiency &mdash; complex transformations, performance debugging, and the ability to write and review transformation logic across layers</li><li>
Git-based version control in a team environment &mdash; branching strategy, pull requests, and code review are part of your normal workflow, not an afterthought</li><li>
Experience with pipeline orchestration and monitoring &mdash; you've built alerting and recovery logic, not just scheduled jobs and hoped for the best</li><li>
Comfortable working in agile scrum &mdash; you manage your own backlog, participate meaningfully in sprint ceremonies, and keep your work visible without needing to be chased; experience with Jira is preferred</li><li>
Prior experience working in a lean, high-ownership environment &mdash; startup, scale-up, or a small team inside a larger company where you wore multiple hats</li></ul>

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications:
<ul><li>
Direct Matillion experience (Matillion ETL or Matillion Data Productivity Cloud)</li><li>
Familiarity with dbt for transformation layer development &mdash; we use Matillion as our primary ETL tool but understanding dbt patterns is additive as our stack evolves</li><li>
Experience in telecom, ISP, or infrastructure-heavy industries &mdash; familiarity with subscriber data, network metrics, or capital-intensive operational data models is a plus</li><li>
Exposure to Secoda or another data catalog/lineage tool for documenting pipeline infrastructure</li><li>
Foundational knowledge of Python for pipeline scripting, API ingestion, or data quality automation</li><li>
Hands-on experience or strong interest in Snowflake Cortex &mdash; familiarity with Cortex ML functions, LLM capabilities, or embedding workflows within Snowflake is a meaningful differentiator for this role</li><li>
Experience with or strong interest in AI/ML infrastructure &mdash; feature stores, model pipelines, or data infrastructure supporting machine learning workflows</li><li>
Hands-on experience with generative AI tools and frontier models and genuine enthusiasm for how they can be embedded into data engineering workflows &mdash; automation, anomaly detection, and pipeline observability are all areas we expect to explore</li></ul>

Growth Opportunity

Data engineering is no longer just plumbing &mdash; and this role reflects that. In the near term, the focus is on building a pipeline and warehouse layer the business can depend on, and maturing a Snowflake environment that has real room to grow. That alone is a meaningful and visible charter.

But the longer arc of this role points toward intelligent infrastructure. Snowflake Cortex puts ML and LLM capabilities directly inside the warehouse &mdash; no separate ML stack required &mdash; and you'll be the person who figures out what that means for us in practice. From anomaly detection to automated classification to embedding-based search, this is genuinely greenfield work with direct business impact.

For the right candidate, this is also an opportunity to define what good data engineering looks like at this company &mdash; the architecture patterns, the deployment standards, the quality frameworks. Senior BI Developer &amp; Analytics Engineer

We've built a modern data stack &mdash; Snowflake, Tableau, Matillion, Sigma, and Secoda &mdash; and it's generating real value. Now we need someone to own it. This role exists to take day-to-day execution of our reporting layer and data governance program off the VP's plate, so the business gets a dedicated expert, and the platform gets the sustained attention it deserves. Success looks like a reporting layer stakeholders trust, a data catalog teams actually use, and a governance foundation that scales with us.

Who You Are

You're the kind of person who gets genuinely curious about why a number looks off &mdash; and doesn't stop until you know. You enjoy the intellectual challenge of translating messy business questions into clean, trustworthy analytical outputs, and you take real pride in the quality of what you ship. You work best when you own your domain, set your own standard, and aren't waiting for someone to tell you what needs fixing.

Key Responsibilities:

Own the Tableau environment end-to-end: development, performance tuning, version control, and quality standards for dashboards and data sources across operational, financial, and infrastructure reporting</li><li>
Maintain and evolve our KPI library &mdash; partnering with business stakeholders to ensure definitions are documented, agreed upon, and consistently reflected across reporting surfaces</li><li>
Drive data governance adoption using Secoda as our primary catalog tool &mdash; including metadata management, lineage documentation, data classification, and onboarding business teams to self-service discovery</li><li>
Enforce and refine Snowflake RBAC policies, working with data engineering to ensure access controls align with data sensitivity, compliance requirements, and least-privilege principles</li><li>
Serve as the first line of quality assurance for the reporting layer &mdash; catching data issues before stakeholders do, diagnosing root causes, and closing the loop with upstream fixes</li><li>
Partner directly with Finance, Operations, and Network/Infrastructure teams to translate business questions into scalable analytical solutions, not one-off reports</li><li>
Build and document BI development standards &mdash; reusable templates, naming conventions, and review processes that make the platform easier to maintain as the team grows</li><li>
Support ad hoc analytical requests with the judgment to distinguish what should be self-service, what warrants a new dashboard, and what's a deeper analytical problem worth solving properly</li><li>
Actively contribute to the evolution of our Snowflake gold layer &mdash; as KPI definitions change and reporting capabilities expand based on stakeholder feedback, you'll be responsible for updating and extending transformation logic, not just consuming it; this means being comfortable reading existing model structure, making targeted changes, and documenting what you've built</li><li>
Collaborate closely with Data Engineering on pipeline outputs and Snowflake layer structure so that reporting surfaces are built on a stable, well-understood foundation</li><li>
Contribute to early-stage data science initiatives as the platform matures &mdash; anomaly detection, forecasting, and operational ML use cases are on the roadmap</li><li>
Manage your work in agile scrum using Jira &mdash; maintaining a well-groomed backlog, participating in sprint planning and retrospectives, and keeping your work visible and prioritized without needing to be chased</li></ul>

Required Qualifications:
<ul><li>
5&ndash;7 years of hands-on BI development experience; you've been the go-to person on a data or analytics function &mdash; not managing a team, but the senior individual contributor others relied on</li><li>
3+ years with Tableau as a primary tool, including ownership of a Tableau Server or Cloud environment &mdash; publishing to someone else's server doesn't count here</li><li>
Deep SQL proficiency in Snowflake specifically &mdash; writing complex queries is table stakes; we're looking for demonstrated experience with query optimization, virtual warehouse sizing, clustering keys, and materialization strategies</li><li>
Hands-on experience writing or maintaining transformation logic in a layered warehouse model (bronze/silver/gold or equivalent) &mdash; you understand how business logic gets encoded in a transformation layer and you're comfortable extending it, not just reading it</li><li>
Experience with data governance concepts in practice &mdash; not just theory: data cataloging, lineage, access controls, and documentation workflows</li><li>
Demonstrated ability to work with business stakeholders to gather requirements, push back on scope, and deliver analytical work that actually gets used</li><li>
Comfortable operating as a senior individual contributor in a lean environment &mdash; you set the standard, you don't wait for one</li></ul>

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications:
<ul><li>
Experience with Secoda or a comparable data catalog tool (Alation, Atlan, Collibra)</li><li>
Exposure to Sigma Computing as a self-service analytics layer</li><li>
Experience in telecom, ISP, or infrastructure-heavy industries &mdash; understanding subscriber metrics, network KPIs, or financial reporting in a capital-intensive business is a plus</li><li>
Foundational knowledge of Python for analytical work &mdash; not a requirement on day one, but a signal of growth trajectory toward data science</li><li>
Hands-on experience with generative AI tools and frontier models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc.) &mdash; we're not looking for a researcher, but someone who has experimented with embedding these capabilities into analytical workflows and is genuinely enthusiastic about where the technology is headed</li><li>
Familiarity with Git/GitLab for version-controlling BI assets</li><li>
Comfortable working in agile scrum &mdash; you manage your own backlog, participate meaningfully in sprint ceremonies, and keep your work visible without needing to be chased; experience with Jira is preferred</li></ul>

Growth Opportunity

This role is designed to evolve with you and with the platform. In the near term, the priority is stabilizing and scaling our reporting layer and governance program &mdash; but that's the foundation, not the ceiling.

As the data platform matures, there is a deliberate and supported path into applied data science work. That means contributing to forecasting models, building anomaly detection for operational KPIs, and eventually helping shape an ML infrastructure layer as the business scales. You won't have to make a case to move in that direction &mdash; it's already on the roadmap, and the expectation is that this role grows into it.

Beyond the technical trajectory, there's real organizational scope here. The standards, governance frameworks, and BI development practices you establish will define how this data function operates for years. As the team expands, you'll have had a direct hand in building what it's built on &mdash; and the influence that comes with that won't quietly disappear when new people join.
