The Library Assistant will provide assistance to a diverse population of members in using library resources. Assistance is given to members in person, via phone, and via email. These resources include, but are not limited to: printed materials, digital media, online databases, internet searches, faxing (internet &amp; traditional), copying, and printing. The Library Assistant will also assist in the day-to-day functions of the Library &ndash; checking in/out materials, shelving books, opening/closing duties, creating/updating member records, etc.

Education &amp; Experience Requirements 
Candidate must have a high school degree (or equivalent). College experience is preferred. Computer proficiency is required. Customer service experience in a public library setting is preferred. PA Child Abuse Clearance, PA Criminal History Clearance, FBI fingerprint-based Criminal History Clearance, and Mandated Reporter Training Certificate are required. 
Duties and Responsibilities<ul><li>
Performs duties related to checking in and checking out library materials. This includes using the ILS computer database and collecting fees.</li><li>
Performs direct customer service duties to all library members and users, in-person, via email or by phone.</li><li>
Creates and updates member records.</li><li>
Checks materials that have been returned for good condition, completeness and other shelving requirements. Changes the status of materials in the ILS computer database.</li><li>
Shelves materials that are returned to the library.</li><li>
Assists members with locating materials, physical and digital, using the ILS database. This includes assisting members with eBooks, eReaders, OPACs, and Inter Library Loan.
</li><li>Assists members with the use of computer applications including the Internet, digital devices, and online databases. Makes referrals to Martin Library&rsquo;s Member Services as needed.
</li><li>Assist members with public computer use. Answer general computer, email, printing and internet questions.</li><li>
Make photocopies. Scan and email documents using photocopier.</li><li>
Performs opening and closing procedures, including light cleaning. Ensures that the appearance of the desk area, the shelving units and the sitting areas are neat, clean and organized. This includes reading shelves and re-shelving out of order materials.</li><li>
Inform members of Library policies and rules and enforces these and completes incident reports in a timely manner.</li><li>
Provides guidance to volunteers and assists them when needed.</li><li>
Other duties as requested by the Library Supervisor.</li></ul>
Physical Requirements<ul><li>
Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds from ground level to waist level and be able to bend, squat, and kneel occasionally throughout work shift.</li><li>
Must be able to push/pull carts weighing up to 120 pounds.</li><li>
Must be able to reach, lift, and stretch throughout the work day.</li><li>
Must be able to stand and/or walk up to four hours at a time.</li><li>
Must be able to sit for up to four hours at a time</li></ul></div>

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Substitute Instructional Library Assistant works at York Area Regional Charter School (YARCS) on an as needed basis, carrying out the duties of the regularly appointed Instructional Library Assistant. This position requires flexible availability; in some instances, the substitute may be scheduled to work in advance and in other instances, the substitute may be contacted early in the morning to work that day.
Requirements:

EDUCATION &amp; EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Must be a high school graduate. Prior experience working effectively with children is preferred. Basic knowledge of library services; experience providing educational programs to elementary school children; or storytelling experience is a plus. Experience using computers is essential. Understands basic classroom management techniques and can enforce rules when necessary.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Must enjoy working in a multicultural work environment, interacting, and encouraging children to succeed. This position requires someone with excellent communication skills and the ability to lead groups of children. Must be able to maintain confidentiality of student records and behaviors. The candidate must be reliable, creative, a self-starter and feel comfortable handling a variety of tasks.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES<ul><li>
Implement the daily activities of a school library during the school day, including interacting with teachers and students as directed and maintaining order during the school day.</li><li>
Implement programs for children such as storytelling experiences for students enrolled in primary grades and reinforcing library instruction for upper grades.</li><li>
Assist students with checking out books; reshelve returned books.</li><li>
Perform other duties as requested by supervisor or school administration pertaining directly to library services.</li></ul>

Motivate and assist the students to follow the rules and regulations of the program.</li><li>
Interact positively with parents and facilitate positive parent/child interaction. Conduct yourself as an appropriate role model for parents by demonstrating positive attention to children at all times.</li><li>
Assist with community activities, Summer Reading activities, and program projects as appropriate and/or as assigned.</li><li>
Respect the rights of families in the program and maintain their confidentiality.</li><li>
Employ appropriate practices and maintain a proper early childhood environment.</li><li>
Keep daily attendance logs.</li><li>
During ILA time, field trips, and other program activities provide proactive assistance to parents, especially those who have more than one child in the program.</li><li>
Conduct assessments at the assigned times and other reporting required by the program. Maintain a file on each student that contains dated checklists, portfolio, progress reports, detailed assessment information, and other daily and monthly reporting forms as required.</li><li>
Implement program and class curriculum as appropriate.</li><li>
Complete all required federal, state, and program paperwork on time.</li><li>
Schedule and participate in regular planning meetings with the Professional Learning Community (PLC).</li><li>
Provide supervision of children, parents, program aides, volunteers and all others in your classroom.</li><li>
Use appropriate early childhood curriculum and implement the daily program with the help of other teachers, aides or volunteers.</li><li>
Perform all other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator or her/his designee.</li></ul></div>
