Job Description

The Corrections Officer is responsible for the security, health, welfare and safety of inmates in the County's correctional facility, and the effective delivery of correctional services through the observance of all federal and state laws, county ordinances, correctional policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Responsibilities may include screening inmates for behaviors, attitudes, and interests; conducting initial custody assessments; supervising inmates and enforcing rules and regulations to ensure the security of assigned area and personnel; transporting inmates to and from court and medical appointments; tracking and record keeping of all community service hours worked.

Job Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Supervises inmates and enforces rules and regulations to ensure the security of assigned area and personnel; escorts inmates when out of their cell; inspects and searches cells for weapons and contraband; reviews security videos; supervises visitation of inmates; follows and recommends medical protocols as needed; delivers meals; and delivers medication.

Books and releases inmates, to include taking fingerprints and photographs; searching inmates; inventorying belongings; conducting initial custody and medical assessments; conducts inmate orientation; screening inmates for behaviors, attitudes, and interests; assigning and escorting inmates to cells; and releasing inmates when directed or in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.

Supervises perimeter doors, oversees inmate counts, monitors security monitors, responds to intercom calls from inmates, answers incoming jail calls, monitors for Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) violations; assists the public and provides resources to the public and inmates as requested and needed.

Enters, updates, researches, and/or compiles information to prepare and maintain logs, reports, records, rosters, and other documentation; ensures informational accuracy and completeness.

Performs office support duties to include assisting with training new staff, setting up and maintaining assigned areas, and responding to inquiries from internal and external agencies.

Transports inmates to and from courts, clinics, and other applicable locations; ensures safety and compliance with applicable policies and procedures.

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.


Education and/or Experience

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or G.E.D.

Two-year post-secondary education in corrections related filed or job-related experience preferred.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

Valid MN Class D driver’s license

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification preferred.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Principles and practices of patrol and crime prevention;
  • Probations and Corrections techniques and procedures;
  • Crisis and emergency management principles and practices;
  • Recordkeeping principles;
  • Computers and related software applications.
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations;
  • Applicable statutory and case law governing federal, state, civil and criminal procedures regarding rules of evidence, search and seizure, arrest, constitutional law, court procedures and civil rights;
  • Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) regulations;
  • Legal operation of motor vehicles;
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, regulations;
  • Customer service principles;
  • Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment;
  • Modern office technology.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applying and interpreting law enforcement principles and practices;
  • Analyzing situations quickly and objectively, thereby determining the proper course of action;
  • Utilizing a variety of law enforcement weapons and equipment competently, logically and safely;
  • Applying applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations in a fair and impartial manner;
  • Exercise rational judgement;
  • Provide credible and truthful testimony;
  • Deal with situations and people effectively and professionally in stressful situations;
  • Work independently of direct supervision;
  • Preparing and maintaining logs, records, and reports;
  • Interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards;
  • Providing customer service;
  • Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications;
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently and accurately exchange or convey information and to receive work direction;
  • Perform assigned duties and tasks in an effective, efficient and safe manner.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally including rare occasion of up to 200 pounds with assistance of co-workers, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be exposed to adverse environmental conditions, such as, chemicals, blood, and other bodily fluids, challenging behaviors, imminent danger, and threatening environments; incumbents may be expected to travel. Must maintain good physical, mental and emotional fitness.

2026 Salary Information:

GRADE LEVEL: UB23

SALARY RANGE: $26.00 - $34.95 per hour
