Southside Virginia Community College is seeking a College Librarian.
The College Librarian provides leadership and oversight for library services across Southside Virginia Community College, supporting student learning, academic success, faculty instruction, and institutional effectiveness. The position oversees library collections, instruction, academic support services, and daily operations at multiple campus locations, while supervising library staff, tutors, and work-study students. The College Librarian plays a key role in promoting information literacy, supporting retention and completion efforts, and ensuring library services align with institutional goals. SVCC strives to maintain a culture of care for all students; accordingly, the College Librarian provides student-centered leadership that supports, promotes, and sustains a Culture of Care through accessible, inclusive, and responsive library services.
The College Librarian shall have the following responsibilities:
Library Leadership & Operations
- Oversees the development, maintenance, and evaluation of print and non-print library collections to support academic programs, faculty professional development, and student engagement.Administers the Library Collection Development Policy, including budget oversight, selection, evaluation, and weeding of materials
- Ensures materials are cataloged and maintained using current Library of Congress cataloging standards and classification systems
- Maintains organized, accessible library spaces, including stack maintenance and oversight of audiovisual and instructional equipment
Manages intercampus and interlibrary loan services for students, faculty, staff, and community patrons
Supervision & Staffing
- Provides leadership and supervision for library personnel, including:
- Two full-time Library Specialists
- Part-time tutors assigned to library-based academic support
- Work-study students (up to 20 hours per week)
- Oversees hiring recommendations, training, scheduling, task assignments, and ongoing performance feedback
- Ensures compliance with work-study guidelines, timekeeping requirements, and institutional policies
Fosters a service-oriented, student-centered library environment
Instruction & Student Support
- Provides information literacy and research instruction through College Success Skills (SDV 100), embedded course instruction, workshops, and online learning formats
- Collaborates with faculty, advisors, and student success teams to support academic achievement, retention, and completion
- Coordinates library-based academic support services, including tutoring and research assistance
Delivers reference and research support to students, faculty, staff, and community patrons
Assessment, Reporting & Compliance
- Collects, analyzes, and reports library usage, instructional, and service data to support institutional effectiveness, accreditation, and required state and national reporting
- Participates in and promotes the Virginia Community College System’s Information Literacy initiatives
Supports accreditation standards related to learning resources, student support services, and assessment
Digital Resources & Web Presence
- Manages and updates the Library’s web presence and digital resources to ensure accessibility, accuracy, and alignment with institutional communication standards
Collaborates with appropriate offices to maintain compliance with accessibility and technology guidelines
Professional Service
- Participates in regional, state, and national professional library organizations
- Presents workshops and training sessions on information literacy, copyright, library services, and research tools as requested
Serves on college and campus committees as assigned by the President or Vice President for Enrollment Management & Student Success
Other Duties
- Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the College.
