The purpose of this position is to respond to emergency incidents to provide emergency medical care, transport patients, suppress fires, rescue victims, and perform other duties as required. Job duties consist of varied emergency medical, fire suppression and emergency response duties. Successful performance helps ensure the protection of community life and property. FLSA status is Non-Exempt.
The following duties are normal for this classification. FIRE AND MEDICAL CALL DUTIES (30%)
Performs fire attack and suppression duties.
Ensures that adjacent buildings, vehicles, and property are protected from fire damage.
Performs ventilation procedures to remove excess heated gases, heat, and smoke from the burning structure.
Performs salvage and overhaul operations.
Performs patient care in emergency situations.
Participates in vehicle extrication and other rescue operations.
Responds to non-emergency calls from the public as directed.
Completes incident reports as required.
EQUIPMENT OPERATION DUTIES (30%)
Performs daily inspection of fire apparatus.
Maintains tools and equipment.
Maintains vehicle and equipment supply inventories.
Monitors and documents normal wear of apparatus components and equipment.
Reports repair needs to proper personnel.
Cleans apparatus and equipment.
Operates and controls fire apparatus; drives fire apparatus to and from emergency and non-emergency scenes.
Performs equipment set-up upon arrival at fire scenes for the purpose of rescue or fire suppression operations.
Operates fire pumps and aerial devices on fire scenes, training operations, and daily inspections.
Performs daily buildings and grounds maintenance activities.
FIRE PREVENTION DUTIES (20%)
Completes pre-fire inspections and related reports in conjunction with supervisory personnel.
Performs fire hydrant maintenance and flow tests.
Prepares truck displays and fire safety presentations.
Conducts fire drills.
Communicates fire prevention information to the public.
TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES (10%)
Completes training to remain up-to-date in firefighting skills and practices.
Trains in the use of new or updated equipment.
OTHER RELATED DUTIES (10%)
Conducts tours for the public.
Assists in maintaining the station and grounds.
Performs other duties as needed or assigned.
Candidates must meet all minimum requirements set forth by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission as well as departmental qualifications to be considered for this position.
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
Must have no felony convictions.
Must have High School Diploma/GED from an accredited institution.
Must obtain a State of Alabama Professional Firefighter 1 Certification within one (1) year of employment.
Must obtain a State of Alabama EMT License and current National Registry EMT Certification within one (1) year of completing Firefighter I/II and EMT training.
Must have a valid (CPAT) Candidate Physical Abilities Test certificate (in accordance with Alabama Fire College Recruit School).

Job duties are typically performed intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. Employees frequently lift light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
Job duties are typically performed in an office and at fire stations, except while at a fire or other emergency scenes. Employees may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, extreme temperatures, hazardous situations, and inclement weather.
Job duties require the use of protective clothing and devices.
Job duties require the ability to deal with and relate to people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
Job duties require the ability to talk, express, or exchange ideas by means of spoken words and/or hear and perceive the nature of sounds by ear.
Job candidates must be able to adapt to and perform under moderate stress.
Job duties require regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
