2026 Emergency Medicine Hospital Medical Officer

Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced Junior Medical Staff to join the Emergency department.
Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing outer north.
Services are provided through our six main campuses:
Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn and Mernda Community Hospitals and Kilmore District Hospital. In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park, Mernda and Coburg.

Our Emergency Department is situated at our Epping campus, so this position is based on a single site with no requirement for travel between campuses.
About the Role:
As an ED HMO, you will experience a wide range of interesting and varied pathology and have ample opportunity to initiate and be involved in the care of a diverse mix of presentations including complex and unwell medical, surgical, trauma and O+G cases.
As an ED HMO you will have ample opportunity to perform procedures such as suturing, catheterisation, plaster application and IV cannulation. We promote internal growth and frequently have doctors transitioning from HMO to junior ED Registrar via our vibrant resident to Registrar (r2R) programme. Should you be interested in a career in Emergency Medicine, our Directors of Emergency Medicine Training would be happy to speak with you about the options available for ACEM training at the Northern.
We have a weekly HMO Education Program at The Northern run by a dedicated ED Consultant. Topics covered include ultrasound and ECG interpretation. There is also a Case of the Week disseminated via the ED HMO Whatsapp group to enhance your learning.
There are opportunities weekly to be involved in simulation program on the ED floor, giving you the opportunity to develop skills that are required to work as part of a cohesive team. Simulations run weekly and are accompanied with a de-brief and written review with recommendations.
Our ED Ultrasound Faculty offer dedicated training slots that will ensure you can build on your ultrasound experience, as well as giving you access to experienced ultrasound clinicians that can guide you through the CCPU process and accredit your scans. We currently have 3 ultrasound machines.
There are ample opportunities to be involved in quality improvement projects which will integrate you within the department. There are opportunities within our Quality team and APT (Addiction, Psychiatry and Toxicology) team to be involved in audits and research projects to bolster your CVs.
We have a strong leadership structure and involved Junior Medical Workforce to ensure rosters are fair as we actively promote clinician well-being and self-care.
We are only 30 minutes from the Melbourne city, you will find that the northern corridor is an affordable and rapidly expanding area that many of our doctors live in and enjoy the plethora of dining and entertainment options.
