Job Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced 911 Director to lead and manage our Arenac County Central Dispatch. This vital role involves overseeing the daily operations of dispatch services, ensuring rapid and accurate response to emergency calls, and coordinating with law enforcement, fire, medical services, and other first responders. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, extensive knowledge of emergency response protocols, and a passion for serving the community. As our 911 Director, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining public safety, optimizing dispatch processes, and fostering a team-oriented environment that prioritizes excellence in emergency response. The Director oversees budgetary functions, hiring, training, and strategic planning while ensuring legal compliance and serving as a key liaison during critical incidents. The ideal candidate has excellent resolve and composure in stressful situations and a proven track record of leadership and commitment in emergency services. This is a salaried position under contract with the Teamsters Union. Current salary is 57,843.51 annually.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate all activities within the 911 dispatch center to ensure efficient handling of emergency calls and dispatch operations.
  • Oversee the training, scheduling, and performance evaluations of dispatch staff to maintain high standards of service delivery.
  • Implement and monitor protocols for phone triage, call processing, and data entry to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulations.
  • Utilize GIS (Geographic Information Systems), GPS technology, and law enforcement databases to support accurate location tracking and incident management.
  • Manage multi-line phone systems, ensuring prompt response with professional phone etiquette and effective communication skills.
  • Analyze call data, incident reports, and operational metrics to identify areas for improvement and implement process enhancements.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, medical personnel, fire departments, and other stakeholders to coordinate emergency responses efficiently.
  • Ensure compliance with security protocols, confidentiality standards, and legal requirements related to emergency communications.
  • Handle conflict management situations with professionalism while maintaining calmness under pressure.
  • Maintain detailed records through transcription, data entry, and report documentation for accountability and quality assurance.

Experience

  • Proven experience in emergency services.
  • Demonstrated expertise in dispatching procedures within a public safety environment.
  • Strong familiarity with GIS mapping tools, GPS systems, law enforcement databases, and terminology.
  • Experience in phone triage techniques for prioritizing emergency calls effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to manage high-stress situations calmly and clearly.
  • Skilled in analysis of operational data to improve dispatch efficiency and response times.
  • Knowledge of security practices related to emergency communication centers.
  • Ability to handle conflict resolution with tact while maintaining professionalism during challenging interactions.

Must be able to pass a full background check

No felonies

No misdemeanors within the last 10 years, prior misdemeanors will be evaluated by the Board of Commissioners with assistance of the Dispatch LASO and CJIS to determine eligibility for employment

Fingerprints

Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe

Typing ability of 40 words per minute

Strong communication and writing skills

Proven experience in emergency communication management and leadership of 10 years or equivalent

Able to interact with public officials and manage employee morale

Training and Certifications:

Federal CJIS Security and Awareness Training

BS&A training for billing and payroll

TAC, LASO, and basic LEIN

FOIA Preparation (Freedom of Information Act)

Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)

FEMA training IS-100c, IS-144a, IS-200c; IS-257c; IS-700b; IS-800d

Pay: From $57,843.51 per year
