The Academic Advisor assists students in their growth and development by constructing meaningful educational plans compatible with their life goals. It is a continuous and consistent process that is built upon the basis of frequent, accumulated personal contacts between advisor and advisee. The Academic Advisor is responsible for assessing and counseling individuals and providing individual/group education and vocational guidance services. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
One year of experience as a college/university academic advisor or related area, such as Education and Counseling;
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- advising students on a one-on-one basis in a specific College discipline,
- maintaining current information regarding all students’ advisement,
- establishing rapport with advisees and faculty in their College, development of knowledge related to all degree programs offered in the College,
- maintaining regular contact with advisees via telephone and e-mail
- monitoring and facilitating academic progress through ongoing collaboration with faculty and student
- assisting students with personal goal setting, time management, study skills, and other academic success factors
- ensuring that advisees know about and utilize university resources such as tutoring centers, the University Counseling Center, Disability Support Services, etc.
- explaining institutional policies and procedures, including the use of technology in communication, academics, advising, and registration to students
- facilitating exploration of possible majors
- move students toward a major declaration
- advising incoming freshmen during summer orientation and registration
- assist with Welcome Week and other academic orientations
- coordinate or assist with advising functions and research projects related to undeclared and other majors
- other duties as assigned by the Director of Advising and the Provost Office, as they relate to advisement and retention.

Required Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in education, counseling, or higher education, or a related field.
Preferred Education and/or Experience
The formal education equivalent of a master’s degree in education, counseling, or counselor education, plus several years of experience in counseling or a related field.
