ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

The Bridge Lake Point Waunona Neighborhood Center is a neighborhood center on the southeast side of Madison, and is part of Vera Court Neighborhood Center, Inc. Our mission is to journey with our neighbors—uplifting youth, supporting families, and creating spaces of belonging where communities grow stronger together. Our youth programs focus on academics, social emotional learning and belonging. We host elementary and middle programs which run in the afterschool setting as well as 8-week long summer camps.

The Academic Program Tutor is a key member of the Milestones Team, which supports students on their academic journeys. The Academic Program Tutor will primarily support elementary and middle school students in strengthening their reading and math foundational skills through individual or small group tutoring. Tutors may also provide academic support in neighboring elementary and middle schools that could include in-class support or out of class individual and small group tutoring. This is an ideal position for an individual looking to support student learning outside of the traditional classroom setting and has interest in making learning fun and engaging. The tutor will provide the following functions:

TUTORING

  • Plan and implement 1:1 and small group (1:2-4) tutoring sessions during program hours.
  • Research, design, and/or organize tutor resources
  • Maintain responsibility for the academic support of a small group of students.
  • Provide direct assistance in the use of equipment, learning objects, and materials needed for student success
  • Encourage students to become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Collaborate with Milestones team
  • Participate in data collection and data tracking
  • Assist in necessary reporting

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Passion for community support and relationship building
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, both written and spoken
  • At least 1 year experience working in an academic tutoring role, either paid or volunteer
  • Knowledgeable in mathematics and reading instruction and/or the willingness to develop these skills through workshops and ongoing professional development
  • Ability work independently and collaboratively with a team
  • Demonstrates cultural competence

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 21 years of age with a clean driving record, a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a 15-passenger van for field trips
  • At least 1 year experience working with youth, preferably in an after school setting
  • Enrollment or experience in higher education. Can be a current or former student at a two or four year post-secondary institution
  • Knowledge of and experience with: problem solving; behavior management; and conflict de-escalation/resolution.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

This is a part time, year round position with an hourly rate ranging from $19.81/hr and 20 hours per week. Benefits package includes paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, 403(b) retirement plan with up to 5% employer match, professional development stipend and more.
