Academic Writing & Writing Competition Coach (Remote)

About the Position

We are seeking exceptional Academic Writing and Writing Competition Coaches to work with highly motivated middle and high school students across the United States.

The ideal candidate is a graduate, current faculty member, lecturer, Ph.D. candidate, or writing instructor affiliated with a top university and possesses extensive experience in academic writing, critical thinking, research, and competitive writing mentorship.

Candidates must have a proven record of guiding students to recognition in prestigious writing competitions, publications, or selective academic programs.

Responsibilities

  • Coach students in argumentative, analytical, persuasive, journalistic, and academic writing.
  • Guide students through the brainstorming, research, outlining, drafting, revision, and editing process.
  • Mentor students preparing submissions for national and international writing competitions.
  • Teach critical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, source evaluation, and academic research skills.
  • Provide detailed feedback on essays and written work.
  • Help students develop unique ideas and strong intellectual arguments.

Experience coaching students for one or more of the following is strongly preferred:

  • John Locke Essay Competition
  • Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
  • Harvard International Review Academic Writing Contest
  • EngineerGirl Writing Contest
  • Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Contest
  • National History Day
  • The Concord Review
  • Profile in Courage Essay Contest
  • Journalism and Editorial Writing Competitions
  • Academic Research Publications and Independent Research Projects
  • The IPPF Contest Writing

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from a top university.
  • Experience teaching academic writing, essay writing, journalism, research writing, or competitive writing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to mentor high-achieving students and provide constructive feedback.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current or former faculty member, lecturer, graduate instructor, or writing center tutor at a top university.
  • Graduate degree (Master's, Ph.D., J.D., or equivalent).
  • Published writer, journalist, researcher, or editor.
  • Proven record of students earning awards, honors, publications, Gold Keys, national recognition, shortlist placements, finalist awards, or other competitive achievements.
  • Experience mentoring students applying to highly selective colleges and universities.

Compensation:

Starting at $30/hour and up, based on experience and qualifications.

Pay: From $30.00 per hour
