Academic Youth Development Professional – Intern

POSITION SUMMARY

The Academic Youth Development Professional – Intern is responsible for implementing engaging STEM learning activities and providing academic support to school-grade members during after-school programming. This role focuses on tutoring and mentoring teens in Math, Algebra, Science, and Social Studies while fostering academic confidence, critical thinking, and college and career readiness.

This position is more than tutoring—it is about building meaningful relationships, inspiring academic growth, and empowering youth in our community to reach their full potential.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide small-group and one-on-one tutoring in:
    • Algebra and higher-level math
    • Science (biology, chemistry, environmental science, etc.)
    • Social Studies (history, civics, government, economics)
  • Implement hands-on, project-based STEM learning activities.
  • Assist members with homework completion, test preparation, and academic goal setting.
  • Connect classroom learning to real-world applications and career pathways.
  • Foster positive mentoring relationships that promote accountability and self-confidence.
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Collaborate with Club staff to support overall program quality and member success.
  • Uphold Club policies, safety standards, and youth development best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong knowledge of Algebra and core high school academic subjects.
  • Ability to make learning engaging, interactive, and developmentally appropriate.
  • Passion for youth development and educational equity.
  • Experience working with youth preferred.
  • Dependable, patient, and skilled in building positive relationships.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to engage actively with youth in a classroom setting.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and supervise program areas for extended periods.
