POSITION SUMMARY

The Access Services and Assessment Librarian at the J.W. Long Library is responsible for managing all areas of Access Services, including circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan, and consortial borrowing and lending (Summit). Additionally, the librarian coordinates the implementation of a comprehensive and strategic assessment program within the J.W. Long Library, in consultation with the Director. The incumbent will supervise a team of approximately 15 student employees who work at the Law Library Circulation Desk, and is responsible for monitoring library use and security. The incumbent plans, communicates and implements policies and procedures to support Access Services, and coordinates with the Director to design and implement the assessment program. This position requires working occasional evening and weekend shifts when classes are in session.

In all areas of responsibility, the incumbent of this position safeguards the confidentiality of departmental and/or office administration by exercising discretion in communicating information to faculty, students and staff, and handling departmental records and files, personnel actions, performance evaluations, and similar confidential materials. The Access Services and Assessment Librarian supports the university’s mission by providing excellent service to students, faculty and staff. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following functions:

Access Services

  • Responsible for overall management of the unit including circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan (ILL), Summit services, and stacks maintenance.

  • Supervises (hires, trains, and evaluates) both graduate and undergraduate student employees.

  • Requests and processes materials according to ILL, Summit, and document delivery protocols; handles complex requests.

  • Responsible for course reserve material once purchased.

  • Responsible for interpretation of policies; makes decisions regarding exceptional circumstances. Responds to and resolves patron concerns and complaints as they affect Access Services.

  • Together with library Systems staff, maintains and updates the fulfillment services and user management areas of the integrated library system (ILS) and the ILL system. Participates in ILS and ILL training, keeps up-to-date on best practices, etc.

  • Provides assistance to Law and University students, faculty, staff and others in locating materials in the library and in supplying information about resources and services.

  • Facilitates a student work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to further the DEI mission of the Law School and the University.

  • Works closely with the Law Library Director to provide excellent services through active participation in the development of library goals and objectives.

  • Serves as the contact for Summit Borrowing and the Courier programs; implements Summit circulation procedures and troubleshoots with consortium members on a regular basis.

  • Maintains well-organized, efficient operations and a smooth workflow.

  • Keeps current on latest developments in Access Services.

  • Participates in providing library reference services to faculty, students and staff.

Assessment

  • Promotes the integration of both quantitative and qualitative assessment related to services, collections, technology, and physical spaces, for the J.W. Long Library.

  • Leads team-based development of plans for assessment and implementation of the processes to collect, organize, preserve and disseminate assessment data for internal decision-making and external reporting

  • Analyzes and reports quantitative and qualitative data gathered from various sources including library systems, vendor statistics, observations, surveys, web analytics, interviews, and focus groups and facilitates the use of this data to support library initiatives

  • Collaborates on cross-departmental quantitative and qualitative user and research studies and actively participates in or supports assessment-focused data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • First line responder for safety and security issues; maintains contacts with Campus Safety Office, monitors library space, keeps staff informed of potential problems, etc. Coordinates library safety routines with Campus Safety and other departments.

  • Handles initiation and follow-up on facilities work orders. Evaluates the need for supplies and equipment.

  • Responsible for billing processes and procedures for Circulation, Summit, and ILL. In coordination with the Law Library Director, receives and tracks invoices, coordinates purchasing, and payment for Circulation, Summit, and ILL.

  • Communicates with library users about their accounts and use of materials and services.

  • Contributes to budgetary planning and purchasing in order to enhance and support collection development.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Meets regularly with all library personnel in staff meetings.

  • Participates in local and regional library consortia.

  • Serves on library and university committees.

  • Provides supervision of the library as needed during the academic term; occasionally other weekend or evening hours may be required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB SCOPE

The work of the Access Services Librarian involves responsibility and accountability for efficient, innovative planning, the implementation of policy, and the management of circulation and reserve services, Summit Borrowing, Interlibrary Loan services and library space security/safety. The incumbent must be responsive to the needs of faculty, staff and students in a very specialized and high demand environment. The incumbent is frequently the initial, often the sole, point of contact with library users and as such represents the library and the University. The individual handles unexpected and unusual situations on a daily basis, which require independent decisions. As well as management responsibilities, the incumbent directly serves library users. Reference work requires judgment, knowledge of a variety of reference tools, and the ability to conduct reference interviews.

Recognizes and refers appropriate questions to the Law Library Director. The incumbent supervises and provides direction to 15+ student employees at the Law Library Circulation Desk.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to meet the responsibilities and obligations outlined in the job description and scope

  • Graduate degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution. A graduate degree in a related field with significant relevant experience will also be considered.

  • Previous library experience including interlibrary loan processing preferred.

  • Strong public service orientation

  • Successful clearance of a criminal conviction record check.

Typical Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm

Physical Demands & Working Conditions: Standard library environment

Salary: $56,850
