Position Summary
Stremler Gravel Inc. is seeking a highly detail-oriented Accounting Assistant to support weekly payroll processing, accounts payable operations, and certified payroll reporting for prevailing wage construction projects.
We are looking for someone who is tech-savvy and comfortable working in evolving systems and workflows. This role is not just transactional; it plays a key role in improving how payroll and accounting processes operate across the business.
The ideal candidate will:
- Quickly learn and adapt to new software and tools
- Support implementation and improvement of systems (payroll, AP, job costing, reporting)
- Help identify opportunities to reduce manual work through better workflows
- Be comfortable “figuring things out” in new platforms without extensive handholding
- Work within systems such as Miter or similar construction payroll platforms
- Support standardization across multiple entities
This role is critical in ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial operations across three business entities.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll & Certified Payroll
- Process weekly payroll accurately and on schedule
- Support payroll across multiple entities and job cost structures
- Prepare certified payroll reports for review and submission
- Ensure compliance with federal, state (WA L&I), and project-specific wage requirements
- Maintain accurate employee classifications, rates, and job coding
- Work within payroll systems (Miter experience a plus)
Accounts Payable
- Process and code vendor invoices across multiple entities
- Prepare and execute weekly accounts payable check runs
- Ensure proper approval workflows are followed
- Maintain vendor records and resolve discrepancies
- Monitor invoice deadlines to ensure timely payments
Compliance & Reporting
- Support prevailing wage compliance and audit readiness
- Maintain organized records for certified payroll submissions and job documentation
- Ensure alignment with Washington State L&I requirements and/or general contractor reporting systems
Process & Operational Support
- Support process improvements across payroll and AP workflows
- Assist in strengthening internal controls and documentation practices
- Work across multiple entities and adapt to evolving workflows and priorities
- Collaborate with CFO, Controller, and operations team to improve efficiency and accuracy
Required Qualifications
- 2–3 years of experience in payroll and/or accounts payable (construction strongly preferred)
- Solid understanding of construction accounting principles
- Experience with weekly payroll cycles and vendor payment processing
- High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and problem-solve in real time
- Proficiency with accounting/payroll systems (Miter and QuickBooks experience a plus)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working across multiple business entities
- Exposure to prevailing wage and certified payroll reporting
- Familiarity with Washington State L&I prevailing wage requirements
- Exposure to construction project accounting or heavy civil operations
- Process improvement mindset (willingness to streamline and build better systems)
- Associate’s degree in accounting or related field, or equivalent work experience in payroll, accounts payable, or construction accounting

Work Environment
- Full-time, Monday–Friday, 40 hours per week
- Flexible start times available (within core business coverage needs)
- On-site role in a fast-paced construction office environment
- Weekly payroll and accounts payable cycles require consistent attention to deadlines
- Success in this role requires strong organization, responsiveness, and attention to detail

Compensation
Approximately $32 - $38/hour, depending on experience.
Pay: $32.00 - $38.00 per hour
