New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) provides civil legal services to low-income New Mexicans to promote family and economic stability, helping clients access food, shelter, security, and to preserve their unique cultural heritages. NMLA has locations throughout the state, including Santa Ana Pueblo, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Gallup, Roswell, Silver City, and Taos.

This position is based in the Albuquerque office and reports to the Chief Financial Officer, and works closely with the Director of Grants Administration.

The Accounting Manager is responsible for performing advanced accounting functions and supporting the Chief Financial Officer in maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and grant requirements.

This position performs complex accounting analysis, assists with financial reporting, audit preparation, and general ledger management, and helps ensure the integrity and accuracy of the organization's financial data.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Accounting and Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and review journal entries and general ledger transactions
  • Perform account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes
  • Prepare financial reports and supporting schedules
  • Analyze financial data and identify inconsistencies

Financial Analysis

  • Perform variance analysis and financial analysis
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting activities
  • Analyze general ledger accounts and financial activity
  • Prepare reports and financial summaries for management

Audit and Compliance

  • Assist with preparation of audit schedules and documentation
  • Support external audit processes and respond to auditor requests
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and organizational policies

Accounting Support and Oversight

  • Assist CFO with accounting operations and financial management activities
  • Provide technical accounting support and analysis
  • Help ensure proper accounting procedures are followed
  • Identify accounting issues and recommend solutions

Payroll and Financial Support

  • Review payroll accounting entries and reconciliations
  • Assist in ensuring payroll transactions are properly recorded
  • Support payroll compliance and reporting requirements

Other Duties

  • Provide support to CFO and accounting department as needed
  • Assist with special projects and financial analysis
  • Assist with the preparation of contract and grant budgets, and budget revisions by the Grants Department
  • Provide support to the Grants Department for contract and grant proposal development and funders reports
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • Minimum five (5) years accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting and financial reporting
  • Experience with account reconciliation and financial analysis
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or CPA candidate preferred
  • Nonprofit accounting experience
  • Experience with MIP Sage, Quickbooks, or similar software
  • Experience supporting audit processes

Salary: $80,000 - $100,000 DOE
