Adapted Physical Education Specialist

Pathway is seeking a qualified Adapted Physical Education Specialist to provide individualized physical education instruction to children with unique disabilities and special needs. The specialist will design and adapt physical activities to improve students’ gross motor skills, physical fitness, and overall well-being in an inclusive environment. Fluency in both Portuguese and English is required, as approximately 45% of the students are Portuguese-speaking. This role ensures all students can safely participate in physical education, fostering their social development and confidence through tailored exercise programs.

Job Duties

Develop Individualized Programs: Create and implement customized physical education programs for students with disabilities, assessing each student’s physical abilities and needs using appropriate evaluation tools.

Adapt Activities: Modify and adapt traditional sports, games, and exercises to meet the specific needs of each child, utilizing adaptive equipment and techniques as needed.

Instruction & Support: Instruct students, using adapted physical education techniques, to improve physical fitness, gross motor skills, perceptual motor skills, and sports/game skills.

Provide individual or small-group adapted PE instruction to address specific student needs and goals.

Safety and Inclusion: Implement safety protocols and ensure a safe, inclusive environment for all students during physical activities. Monitor students closely to prevent injuries and adjust activities for safety and comfort.

Collaborative Planning: Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, therapists, and parents to integrate physical education goals with each student’s overall educational plan. Contribute to and/or write Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) focusing on adaptive physical education objectives and student progress.

Progress Monitoring: Maintain detailed records of each student’s progress, behavior, and achievements in physical education. Regularly evaluate and report on the effectiveness of the adapted PE program for each child, adjusting plans as necessary.

School Events & Team Activities: Coordinate and lead adapted physical activities during school events or special programs. Encourage social interaction and teamwork by organizing group games and inclusive sports activities that allow students of all abilities to participate.

Professional Development: Stay current with best practices in adapted physical education and special education. Attend professional development training to continuously improve instructional methods and knowledge of adaptive equipment and technologies.

Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Special Education/Pedagogy, Physical therapist, Kinesiology or a related field (required)

Pay: $42,077.00 - $42,100.00 per year
