Summary of Position

This position teaches courses in one or more of the following degree/certificate programs; Chemical Dependency Specialization, At-Risk Youth Specialization, Social Work Specialization or Community Health Worker.

Adjunct (part-time), semester-based employment with compensation based on course load and institutional pay schedule

Education and Experience

A Masters degree from an accredited university in social sciences field (psychology, mental health, sociology, social work, substance abuse, criminal justice) with at least 18 graduate hours in that field.

Four years experience in the mental health field in direct client care or six years of related administrative (program coordination, supervisory, teaching in mental health, working directly with college students) can be considered as experience to teach SCWK, PSYT, CMSW courses. In addition: Individuals teaching SOCW courses must have an LMSW and must have a current master’s level social work license. Individuals teaching DAAC courses must have specific experience working with substance abuse clients and/or a current license as a chemical dependency counselor.

Individuals teaching Community Health Worker classes must have a Community Health Worker Instructor certification or be eligible to be certified within a year of employment.

Knowledge Skills and Ability


  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise to include competence in all basic areas of counseling and human services, and/or social work.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with the students, colleagues, community stakeholders and administrative personnel.
  • Commitment to student success and retention.
  • Proficient with current Microsoft Office software package, to include MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and videoconferencing platform.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and multi-task.
  • Be flexible in delivery method and time of instruction, classroom, lecture, lab, and alternative methods including demonstrated ability to use current technology. Is knowledgeable of the Human Services curriculum and schedules in order to assist students in the selection of classes.
  • Familiarity with BlackBoard online learning platform.

Essential Functions

  • Communicates and works with the supervisor, faculty and support personnel regarding exams, course materials, problem solving, and records of student performance.
  • Teaches courses according to the syllabus, textbook, departmental learning resources and appropriate lab/lecture delineation, in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Maintains accurate and up to date student course records and communication.
  • Submit accurately, in the appropriate format and on time: exams, keys and results, course schedules, student progress reports, course grades and grade books.
  • Knows, implements and teaches rules and regulations in the field in which a degree, license or certification is held.
  • Gives adequate notification to the Chair and students of necessary absences from class, provides alternative activities or an appropriate substitute.
  • Participates in institutional and departmental activities that include but are not limited to: maintaining Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation; implementing the Quality Enhancement Plan, and meeting requirements of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
  • Performs other duties as required or approved by the supervisor or department chair.
