JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY
The Assistant Principal with Athletic Duties serves as a member of the high school administrative leadership team and functions as both a campus instructional leader and the chief administrator of the school's athletic program.
In this dual-capacity role, the Assistant Principal with Athletic Duties supports academic excellence, student management, and campus operations while providing comprehensive leadership, supervision, and compliance oversight for all interscholastic athletics.
The Assistant Principal with Athletic Duties also ensures that athletics operate as an extension of the school's instructional mission, promoting academic achievement, student well-being, equity of access, sportsmanship, and positive school culture in alignment with district priorities, CHSAA regulations, and Title IX requirements.
REQUIREMENTS
Education Level Details
Master's degree in Education, Sports Administration, or related field.
License / Certification Required
Colorado Principal/Administrator License Required
CHSAA and CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 60 days)
Work Experience Required
Minimum three (3) years of successful experience as a building leader or equivalent leadership experience in secondary education
Demonstrated experience in athletic leadership, coaching supervision, or activities administration

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Core Assistant Principal Responsibilities

Serve as a member of the campus administrative team.
- Assist the Principal in implementing the Campus Improvement Plan.

Support instructional leadership and monitor student achievement data.

Oversee discipline and academic monitoring for an assigned student cohort.

Ensure student discipline is applied equitably and consistently.

Supervise and evaluate assigned certified, classified, and support staff.

Serve as Administrator on Duty during school hours and at evening/weekend events.

Assist in maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive school climate.

Participate in master scheduling, staffing recommendations, and enrollment planning in collaboration with the Principal.

Participate in campus threat assessment, crisis response planning, and school safety initiatives.
Core Athletic Program Leadership

Serve as the chief administrator of the high school athletic program.

Oversee all athletic programs, coaches, and athletic support staff.

Establish and maintain high standards for sportsmanship, academic eligibility, and student-athlete conduct.

Promote alignment between athletics and the school's academic mission.

Ensure equitable access to athletic programs consistent with district and Title IX expectations.
Instructional Supervision and Evaluation

Supervise and evaluate an assigned instructional department, elective program, or group of certified staff.

Conduct formal observations and evaluation conferences in alignment with district evaluation systems.

Support professional growth and continuous improvement for assigned staff members.
Student Activities and School Engagement

Provide oversight for student activities beyond athletics, including clubs, assemblies, dances, and major campus events as assigned.

Ensure student activities align with district expectations for safety, supervision, and positive school culture.

Support student leadership development and engagement initiatives.
Compliance and Eligibility

Ensure full compliance with CHSAA regulations and league requirements.

Oversee academic and medical eligibility of student-athletes.

Maintain accurate records of participation, eligibility, and required reporting.

Develop and implement safety and risk management protocols for all contests and practices.

Monitor gender equity in athletic participation, facilities, scheduling, and resource allocation consistent with Title IX requirements.
Event and Operational Oversight

Develop and manage athletic schedules across all sports seasons.

Coordinate officials, transportation, event supervision, and security.

Serve as administrative supervisor for home athletic contests and away contests considered high-risk.

Oversee crowd management, emergency procedures, and event safety planning.

Manage athletic facility use in coordination with campus operations.
Fiscal and Resource Management

Develop and administer athletic budgets based on documented program needs.

Oversee equipment, uniforms, officials' payments, and travel expenditures.

Ensure accountability for gate receipts and fundraising activities.

Advocate for facility improvements and program resources through district processes.
Personnel Leadership Athletics

Recruit, recommend, supervise, and evaluate coaching staff.

Provide mentoring and professional development aligned with district expectations.

Ensure coaching staff adhere to district policies, supervision standards, and student safety protocols.

Make recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal of athletic personnel.
Communication and Community Engagement
-
Serve as primary liaison with CHSAA, league offices, and community athletic partners.

Communicate with families, students, and staff regarding athletic policies, schedules, and expectations.

Promote positive public relations through media, school communications, and community events.
District Collaboration
-
Work closely with the ElementaryMiddle School Athletics to align feeder programs with high school athletics.

Collaborate with district leadership on strategic planning, facilities, and equity initiatives for athletics.

Support districtwide initiatives related to wellness, student engagement, and extracurricular programming.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work primarily in a usual office or school environment including classrooms, cafeterias, hallways, playgrounds, gyms, athletic fields and other spaces accessible to students. The Employee may be required to work from a remote location in the event of a district shut-down or other event.
Mental Functions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate, compare, analyze, coordinate, instruct, evaluate, and use interpersonal skills. Occasionally required to compile, copy, compute and negotiate.

Compensation for this position is $97,931 to $141,568 per year (2025-2026), based on verified experience and qualifications, and aligned with the Adams 14 salary schedule. This position is scheduled for 228 work days annually. Additional compensation opportunities may be available through stipends or supplemental assignments, depending on job responsibilities.
