Administrative Assistant

Community High School of Roanoke, Virginia seeks a part time Administrative Assistant.

Applicants should be detail-oriented, personable and have strong time management skills. As this is a school, employees should have a positive attitude and a desire to work with teenagers. Clear communication—both spoken and written—is a must, as is familiarity with business software including Google Workplace and Microsoft Office. Additional competencies or experience with specific school or not-for-profit administrative responsibilities are welcome. Regular duties include answering the phone, keeping daily student attendance and other administrative tasks as they arise. We anticipate that the position will require approximately 20 hours a week when school is in session.

Community High School is a private, progressive, secular institution accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. Although we are not a conservatory, all of our students are required to take a significant number of arts courses in addition to a rigorous preparatory curriculum. Community High School is dedicated to small classes; teachers who prefer sustained and close working relationships with curious and dedicated students are preferred. In addition to conventional academic classes, we offer a variety of subjects not typically taught in high school, from Meiji Japan to Statistics to Paleoanthropology. Our mathematics offerings often range from Algebra I to Second Year Calculus.

We recruit students from a variety of backgrounds reflecting the economic, ethnic, religious and cultural diversity of the region. Our board is dedicated to keeping tuition low—currently it covers less than a third of the cost of educating each student, with additional financial aid available for all with demonstrated need. Tuition for families making less than $60,000 a year is entirely free.

Roanoke City serves as the de facto capital of Virginia’s Blue Ridge. The metropolitan area contains approximately 300,000 people and is home to a major research university, two liberal arts colleges and a medical school. Our campus is located in a renovated Nineteenth Century warehouse in the heart of Roanoke’s historic downtown, a block from the region’s museums of art, science, photography, transportation and history.
