Administrative Crime Analyst

Description

Performs skilled administrative and technical duties and provides information and data to police administration for decision making purposes and resource deployment.

Essential Duties

  • Develop statistical data resources to assist in proactive target investigations, proactive enforcement and education, identification of crime trends and criminal organizations, and the identification of known and repeat offenders;
  • Use computer databases, electronic spreadsheets, desktop publishing, word processing, and statistical applications to manipulate, analyze, and present data;
  • Aid police personnel in guiding the department on how crime analysis products should be used to combat crime and disorder problems in the city;
  • Prepare a variety of reports such as crime information and patrol bulletins, regular activity summaries, department annual report and strategic plan, specific statistical and research reports as needed;
  • Study and stay abreast of current literature on Intelligence-led policing, research methods, and police issues, and make appropriate recommendations for improvements in crime analysis practices;
  • Attend regional meetings of law enforcement personnel to share information on crime series, patterns, and developing trends;
  • Collects and organizes criminal information from a variety of sources, including Uniform Crime Reporting System, the National Incident Based System, field interview reports, intelligence sources, media outlets, and citizen surveys in order to study and analyze crime patterns, trends, and series;
  • Ability to effectively plot and map data in a Geographic Information System to provide visual representation of crime data, trends, and patterns;
  • Updates internal and external procedures relating to this position;
  • Establishes and maintains filing systems, confidential information, and records;
  • Acts as liaison with other employees, departments, and organizations to resolve problems or handle special requests;
  • Handles a variety of responsible administrative or technical assignments, including summarizing reports, conducting research, and preparing reports;
  • Maintains and develops reports, records, and forms in accordance with record retention procedures and internal and external customers;

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Will be called on to perform a variety of internal and external reports or communications for police command staff.
  • Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. and graduation from an accredited college or university with minimally an associate's degree in statistics, math, research methods, or with a concentration in criminal justice data analysis or equivalent experience.
  • Two - three years related experience preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, inter and intra-departmental employees. Ability to analyze and map crime data and interpret for the existence of trends and patterns.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to measure police department performance, crime rate comparison, and Geographic Information System mapping.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or form.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

Solid interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution skills, for work with state and local government officials, citizens, and other City employees.
