How you will make an impact:

The Advanced Automation / Controls Engineer leads the entire controls engineering scope independently for small-to-medium projects, ensuring continuity, maintainability, and long-term support within the single-engineer model in Class 7 cleanrooms and cGMP environments, while elevating safety, reliability, robustness, and serviceability; delegates tasks to technicians and junior engineers as appropriate; provides initial first-line support at startup and transitions first-line support to Manufacturing Engineering and Maintenance (remaining as second-line support).

  • Project leadership: plan scope, schedule, budget, risks, and dependencies in the company-standard project/task management system; deliver on time and within budget; coordinate with cross-functional stakeholders and suppliers.
  • Design and documentation: author and review P&IDs; electrical schematics; pneumatic diagrams; panel/device layouts; BOMs; and process flow diagrams; ensure documentation quality for serviceability and knowledge retention.
  • Build: lead enclosure/panel and field wiring plans; direct technicians; ensure compliance with NEC, UL, CE and strong documentation practices.
  • Integration:
    • Design and validate safety circuits
    • Configure operator interfaces, relays/contactors, transducers, pneumatics, motors/drives
    • Networking: sets up and configures advanced segmented local networks and establishes remote connectivity using routers.
    • PLC/HMI: develop maintainable ladder logic architectures and HMI UX; robust signal conditioning; PID and sequencing for multiple variables; integrate via discrete, analog, serial, and ethernet interfaces. Implement advanced motion control (servo drives/axes).
    • SCADA: design and implement SCADA integrations including security, alarming, data logging/visualization, reports, scripting, and basic web-services where needed.
    • Test/debug: define and execute test plans; lead root cause analysis; implement corrective actions and document lessons learned.
  • Validation/documentation: support cGMP validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) led by Process Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Quality; ensure comprehensive records and traceability.
  • Support and continuous improvement: provide initial first-line support after equipment goes into service to achieve reliable operation; transition first-line support to Manufacturing Engineering and Maintenance and remain second-line support; support legacy controls systems commensurate with role level; Drive reliability and uptime improvements; Contribute to standards and design-for-maintenance/safety enhancements; Mentor junior engineers and technicians.
