About Athens Wellness Clinic
Athens Wellness Clinic (AWC) is a nonprofit, free clinic providing primary care, specialty services, and community health programs to uninsured and underserved patients in Athens, Georgia.
The Opportunity
We're looking for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant who wants more than a traditional clinical role. This position combines direct patient care with meaningful clinical coordination work stewarding specialty programs, supporting clinical operations, and serving as a trusted clinical resource to AWC's care team.
This is a part-time, unbenefited role offering genuine schedule flexibility, competitive compensation, and the chance to help shape how a mission-driven clinic delivers care. You'll report directly to the Executive Director and work in close collaboration with clinical staff, volunteer providers, and community partners.
Licensure & Compliance
- Current, unrestricted Georgia Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license required
- Maintains an active Protocol Agreement with the clinic's designated Medical Director, per Georgia law
- Practices within scope of practice and AWC clinic policies
What You'll Do
Direct Patient Care
- Provide independent primary care visits for clinic patients 1-2 days a week
- Manage acute and chronic conditions, including mental health within the scope of primary care
- Conduct scheduled 30- 45-minute visits and support walk-in care as needed
- Enter and manage orders, refills, labs, and referrals
- Document all clinical encounters in our EMR within required timelines
Clinical Programs Coordination
This is the part of the role that makes it genuinely distinctive. You'll carry delegated clinical coordination responsibility for AWC's specialty and community health programs — bringing consistency, clinical judgment, and a steady hand to work that directly expands patient access.
- Coordinate clinical components of specialty programs, including dermatology, vision care, hepatitis C treatment, and others
- Serve as clinical liaison with external specialty and community partners as delegated
- Support clinical communication related to referrals, diagnostics, and program participation
- Help maintain and refine clinical workflows, protocols, and best practices
- Support quality efforts including chart review, protocol adherence, and standards alignment
- Identify bottlenecks or care-delivery gaps and bring recommendations to leadership
Clinical Operations & Team Support
- Support day-to-day clinical flow and provider coordination
- Assist with onboarding and orienting providers to AWC clinical workflows and expectations
- Serve as a clinical resource to nurses, Medical Assistants, and program coordinators
- Precept students or volunteers as approved by the Executive Director
Note: This role does not carry formal supervisory, disciplinary, or HR authority over clinical staff.
What We're Looking For
- Graduate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program
- Clinical experience in primary care — community health or free clinic experience a plus
- Genuine interest in clinical coordination, systems thinking, and program development
- Strong communication skills and comfort working across a small, collaborative team
- Ability to hold clinical complexity alongside organizational awareness
- Comfort with ambiguity, resource constraints, and meaningful work
- Ability to deliver trauma-informed, compassionate care to diverse populations
Why This Role
- Flexible scheduling — we build the schedule around the right person
- Real clinical coordination authority, not just box-checking duties
- A direct relationship with executive leadership and a say in how clinical programs evolve
- The kind of work that reminds you why you went into healthcare
