Talentnook is seeking experienced, engaging educators to lead hands-on cooking enrichment classes for elementary students (Grades 1–5). This role is ideal for individuals who have direct experience teaching children and are passionate about using cooking as a creative, confidence-building learning tool.
This is an instructional role, not a food service position. Successful candidates are comfortable managing groups of students, explaining concepts clearly, and creating a positive, structured learning environment.
About the Program
Students step into the world of cooking through guided, sensory-rich culinary lessons inspired by the seasons. Using provided lesson plans and recipes, instructors lead students through age-appropriate food preparation while reinforcing teamwork, sequencing, safety, and creativity.
Lessons emphasize:
- Foundational kitchen skills (measuring, mixing, safe cutting with kid-friendly tools)
- Following multi-step instructions
- Seasonal ingredients and healthy, school-friendly foods
- Collaboration, confidence, and curiosity
All lesson plans and recipes are provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate engaging, well-managed cooking classes for students in Grades 1–5
- Translate cooking concepts into clear, age-appropriate instruction
- Guide students through hands-on food preparation while reinforcing safety and teamwork
- Maintain a structured, positive classroom environment (up to 20 students)
- Collaborate with Talentnook staff and follow established lesson plans and procedures
- Communicate professionally with parents and school staff as needed
Required Qualifications (Please Read Carefully)
- At least 1 year of experience working directly with elementary-aged children in a structured setting
(e.g., schools, after-school programs, enrichment programs, camps, tutoring, youth programs)
- Experience teaching or facilitating lessons, activities, or workshops for children
- Knowledge of basic cooking skills and kitchen safety appropriate for young learners
- Strong classroom management skills and ability to engage groups of up to 20 students
- Fun, energetic, and confident teaching style with the ability to motivate young learners
- Patience, empathy, and adaptability when working with children of varying abilities
- Clear communication and organizational skills
- Ability to pass background checks and TB test
- At least 2 years of college education
- Ability to commute to school sites in Walnut Creek and surrounding cities
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry 20–50 lbs. with or without accommodations
Compensation
- $25–$32 per hour
- 3 hours of paid time per class, which includes:
- Lesson review and preparation
- Arrival and prep time at the school site
- 60 minutes of instruction
- Student dismissal procedures
- Communication and coordination with Talentnook staff
- Instructors must arrive 20 minutes before class and remain until all students are dismissed.
Availability
- After-school hours between 1:30 PM–4:30 PM
- 1–3 days per week to start
