Under the general supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor, the Agricultural Technician will perform assignments of average difficulty in support of the administrative needs of the program. The incumbent will assist in a wide variety of tasks including answering telephones, providing customer service, performing data entry and maintaining records of various documents. Knowledge or the willingness to learn, Microsoft Word, Excel and Access is highly desirable. Effective communication and written skills are essential.
Reviews new applications, renewals, and fees submitted for Licenses to Sell Nursery Stock for accuracy and completeness, inputs licensing data and maintains database in order to provide program/license information to applicants, county agricultural commissioners, and the public. Incumbent will be trained thoroughly in the intricacies of the data entry.

Working Conditions

The duties of this position are primarily conducted indoors. The primary workstation is furnished with modular office furniture. The station includes a computer with various software programs including email, a telephone with voice mail, overhead storage areas, and portable and stationary filing drawers. The incumbent works primarily in a modular office that is in close range to workstations of the other support staff. A complete list of working conditions can be found in the Duty Statement.

Regular or recurring telework may occur as part of the incumbent’s ongoing regular schedule in accordance with CDFA’s Telework Policy.

Department Information

As part of the Pest Exclusion Branch, the Nursery Services Program is responsible for the enforcement of laws and regulations that ensure the quality and orderly marketing of nursery plant products. The mission of the program is to prevent the introduction and spread of agricultural pests and diseases in nursery products, thereby protecting California’s environment, agricultural systems, and consumers against economic losses. The program coordinates statewide regulatory and inspection activities with county agricultural commissioners. In addition, the program maintains registration and certification services which provide the agricultural industry with clean planting stock.
