Air Ocean Import Operations

A well-established freight forwarding company with a national presence is seeking an experienced Import Analyst to manage ocean and air freight import operations at their LAX branch. This role focuses primarily on ocean import shipments and requires strong technical expertise in customs compliance, tariff classification, and regulatory requirements. CargoWise proficiency and working knowledge of Partner Government Agencies, particularly FDA and USDA, are essential.

Compensation: $60,000 - $70,000 annually (based on experience and qualifications)

Key Responsibilities:

• Process and manage ocean freight import shipments from vessel arrival through customs clearance and final delivery
• File ISF (Importer Security Filing / 10+2) submissions and ensure timely compliance with CBP requirements
• Perform accurate HTS tariff classification and determine applicable duty rates
• Review and analyze commercial invoices, bills of lading, packing lists, and supporting documentation for compliance
• Coordinate customs entries and clearances, ensuring adherence to CBP regulations
• Manage PGA requirements for FDA and USDA regulated commodities
• Utilize CargoWise to track shipments, process documentation, and maintain client records
• Monitor vessel schedules and proactively communicate arrival updates to clients
• Communicate with steamship lines, container terminals, customs brokers, and drayage carriers regarding cargo status
• Process arrival notices and coordinate container release from ports
• Manage demurrage and detention to minimize additional charges
• Advise clients on import regulations, documentation requirements, and potential compliance issues
• Resolve customs holds, examinations, and discrepancies
• Coordinate drayage from port to final destination
• Work with customs brokers and internal teams to ensure smooth cargo release
• Identify and escalate complex regulatory or compliance issues
• Maintain accurate records in compliance with CBP recordkeeping requirements

Required Qualifications:

• CargoWise experience required (must have)
• 2+ years of experience in ocean freight import operations
• Strong HTS classification skills and tariff determination expertise
• Working knowledge of FDA and USDA import requirements (required)
• ISF filing experience (10+2 submissions)
• Air freight import experience strongly desired
• In-depth understanding of CBP regulations and ocean import procedures
• Familiarity with ocean import documentation (Ocean Bills of Lading, arrival notices, delivery orders, etc.)
• Knowledge of steamship line operations and container logistics
• Experience coordinating with customs brokers on entry clearances
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple shipments simultaneously
• Effective communication skills for client, carrier, and customs broker interaction
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with time-sensitive deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in freight forwarding or customs brokerage environment
• Knowledge of other PGA agencies (NHTSA/DOT, CPSC, etc.)
• Familiarity with ACE (Automated Commercial Environment) portal
• Understanding of free trade agreements and duty mitigation programs
• Experience with demurrage/detention management
• Knowledge of CFS (Container Freight Station) operations
• Customs broker license (or working toward licensure)
