Airport Operations Intern

Purpose

The Airport Operations Intern will be exposed to the day-to-day operations of the airport and will assist the Operations department on their daily tasks. This program is meant to compliment the intern’s education and prepare them for a career in airport management or airport operations. This internship will be set to be a summer program that will last up to 12 weeks with some flexibility provided to accommodate the students’ academic career.

Major Responsibilities

• Assist with daily airfield and terminal inspections to support compliance with FAR Parts 139 & 77 and other procedures, regulations and policies as may be relevant.
• Support coordination with Air Traffic Control, Air Carriers and other tenants.
• Contribute to the continued development of the Airport Certification Manual, Airport Security Plan, Wildlife Hazard Management Plan, and other related procedures.
• Support Operations Department in response to an emergency, critical or unusual event occurring on Airport property.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma
• Completed or in the process of completing a bachelor’s degree in aviation management, aviation operations, or related field. Recent graduates must have graduated within the previous six months. Current students must either be entering their junior year or are in their junior or senior year of the degree program.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license, free of serious or frequent traffic violations.

• Deliver excellent internal and external customer service.
• Must be able to read, write, and understand English
• Must have good written and verbal communication skills, able to maintain accurate written reports
• Must have computer skills, able to use spreadsheet and word processing programs
• Must have poise and ability to interact favorably with a variety of people
• Must be able to establish excellent working relationships with peers, supervisors, tenants and the public
• Be of good moral character and able to adhere to professional ethical standards of conduct as a public employee working in the public administration and operation of airports.

• Requires the ability to lift, carry, push and pull objects up to 50 pounds.
• Job functions require sitting for extended periods, standing and walking frequently, stooping, kneeling, bending, lifting, carrying, and reaching occasionally. Must be able to walk over rough terrain, climb ladders, and crawl through small spaces.
• Extensive wrist and hand movements required for frequent keyboarding, use of equipment, and driving.
• Ability to perform close work to read and use computer required.
• Able to move about facilities & all areas of responsibility
• Ability to operate a computer, fax, telephone and other office equipment
• Ability to communicate via email, two-way radio and phone
• Ability to continuously exchange information through listening and talking with customers, coworkers, and other individuals required.

• Subject to a ten (10) year background check for security clearance.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain an Airport security badge as a condition of employment.

Supplemental Information

WORKING CONTACTS WITH OTHERS (INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL):

• Regular contact with airport management, employees, air traffic control personnel, tenants, vendors, government agency staff and the general public.

• Shift work including days, nights, weekends and holidays. Work is performed in office, terminal and on airfield. Frequent exposure to construction equipment, aircraft engine noise and exhaust (hearing protection required and provided). Occasional exposure to extreme weather conditions, deicing chemicals, airborne particles and dirt. Regular local travel.

• Vehicles including automobile, pickup truck, and utility vehicle; electronic decelerometer; two-way radios, mobile and hand held; computers; controls
