Location: Lambert St. Louis International Airport

(Employees assigned to St. Louis Lambert International Airport may be eligible for a commuting allowance of $180.00 bi-weekly.)

This position is selected for the Hiring Incentive Program. The incentive shall be in the amount of one thousand and five hundred dollars ($1500.00) upon completion of the probationary period. The hiring incentive will be paid (if funds are available) by the Department/Division which appoints the applicant. The hiring incentive is not available to current City employees.

This position enforces local, state and federal laws and FAA regulations by apprehending criminals and keeping public order at the Airport.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities

  • Responds to radio calls, and to the scene of a crime or an accident.
  • Interviews suspects and witnesses and writes crime reports.
  • Conducts investigations of suspicious activity.
  • Detains or arrests violators; books and transports detainees to the appropriate Police Facility.
  • Uses current scientific practices to process crime scenes, property and evidence.
  • Applies for warrants and appears in court, as needed.
  • Performs numerous other activities in support of the Community Policing philosophy.
  • Establishes a rapport with vendors/businesses.
  • Responds to citizen’s and visitor’s questions.
  • Patrols assigned areas, directs traffic, issues traffic tickets.
  • Implements and may instruct others in Airport security measures.
  • Investigates malfunctioning security doors and alarms.
  • May be assigned as an Explosive Detection Canine Handler or detached to a specialized unit.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Data Utilization: Requires the ability to perform mid-level data analysis including the ability to audit, deduce, assess, conclude and appraise. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such established criteria to define consequences and develop alternatives.
  • Human Interaction: This is a work leader/coordinator class. Positions have been assigned on a regular basis partial responsibility for coordinating and guiding the work of at least two or more full time equivalent positions performing the same kind of work. The positions themselves may change periodically or on a regular basis. Typical elements of direct control over other positions by a work leader/coordinator include assigning tasks, monitoring progress and workflow, checking the product, scheduling work, and establishing work standards. This may include employees at more than one location. The work leader/coordinator also has been delegated some responsibilities in assisting the employee who has been assigned regular full supervisory authority, responsibility and accountability in regard to the group of employees. Generally, the work leader has input into supervisory decisions made at a higher level and may have authority to sign leave requests and approve/adjust work hours. Positions at this level are designated team or project leader/coordinator work on a regular and recurring basis. However, in addition to the lead/coordinating responsibilities, the incumbent also can be expected to perform the same or highly similar work as the positions over which the incumbent has accountability, on an as-needed basis.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate, calibrate, tune and synchronize, and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as a motor vehicle, computer terminal, firearm, radio, baton, mace, and/or related materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as log books, property receipts, lists, zoning maps, special orders, blueprints, FAA handbooks, police and canine manuals and other non-routine correspondence.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages and decimals.
  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in critical and/or unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization.
  • Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
  • Physical Requirements: Require the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull moderately heavy objects and materials, twenty (20) to fifty (50) pounds; and may occasionally involve objects and materials up to one hundred (100) pounds, such as restraining a violator or handling a dog. Tasks involve the ability to exert regular and sustained heavy physical effort with an emphasis on climbing and balancing, which also involves stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling to perform patrol duties.
  • Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds, odors and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks, such as perceiving danger.

Other Requirements

  • Positions require shift, weekend and holiday assignments, as well as mandatory overtime assignments.
  • A ten-year background investigation will be conducted in accordance with FAA regulations for positions at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) certificate.

Age: Due to Federal and State regulations, applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of filing application.

Certification/Deputization: Must be certified as a Police Officer by the State of Missouri and deputized as a Police Officer by St. Louis County, Missouri by completion of the working test period.

License: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request. Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application. Only qualified applicants who provide proof of a valid driver’s license will be considered for this position.

  • Medical Examination: Upon acceptance of a conditional job offer, candidates will be required to pass an oral swab Drug Screen Test and Physical Examination and successfully complete a Psychological Examination as part of the Medical Examination procedure. Police Officers are subject to random Drug Screen and Alcohol Tests without advance notice as a condition of their employment

Veterans Preference Points

To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of their DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or upon request. The Director of Personnel may, in their discretion, accept alternate documentation.

City Residence Preference Points

City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
