Job Overview
Bureau chiefs are responsible for delivering updates and analysis on current happenings over a
large, diverse coverage area with the main goal of keeping the public informed while ensuring
journalistic standards are met.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Conduct thorough research to gather accurate and reliable information for news stories.
- Submit multiple news stories daily covering a large territory, to engage existing
audiences and reach new ones.
- Maintain journalistic integrity: Uphold the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and
transparency in all reporting.
- Transcribe and prepare news stories for publication on web site and social media.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with subject-matter experts and conduct
interviews with sources to gather first-hand information and quotes, sound bites and
photos.
- Attend press conferences, events, and other relevant activities to report on current news
topics in your territory.
- Ensure coverage of both well- and little-known towns, villages and cities in your
territory.
- Practice diversity, equity and inclusion in your reporting.
- Collaborate with other team members to develop story ideas and angles.
- Fact-check information and verify sources to ensure accuracy in reporting.
- Stay updated on current events, trends, and developments in the field of journalism.
- Comply with the moral code of the journalistic profession.
- Manage social media and web accounts to promote news stories and engage with the
audience.
- Participate actively in on-air fundraising as needed.
- If participating in, hosting, or endorsing outside public events assure that all appearances
are approved and consistent with WAMC’s ethical standards and priorities.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a news reporter or journalist.
- Strong writing and editing skills with excellent grammar and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in conducting research and gathering information from various sources.
- Knowledge of journalistic ethics and standards.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality of work.
- Familiarity with social media platforms and their use in news reporting.
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications; or equivalent experience.
Salary range: $21 - $30 per hour
