Bison Engineering, Inc., is a Montana-based, employee-owned environmental engineering firm with over 40 years of experience in helping our clients comply with air quality regulations. We specialize in air quality permitting, emissions testing, ambient air monitoring, gas flow monitor design and manufacturing, and water permitting.

Position Summary

Bison is seeking an experienced and forward‑thinking Ambient Air Monitoring Team Director to lead and grow our Ambient Air Monitoring team across multiple locations. This is a senior leadership role responsible for operational excellence, team development, client service, and strategic growth.

The Ambient Air Monitoring Team Director serves as a key connector between field staff, technical experts, and executive leadership—ensuring high‑quality work, strong financial performance, and a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. This role is also a member of Bison’s Management Team (post probationary period) and helps guide the company’s overall direction.

Primary Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to team members, promoting professional growth and high performance.
  • Facilitate regular team meetings to address project-level issues and align on long-term strategies.
  • Cultivate leadership talent within the organization to ensure succession planning and long-term sustainability.

Operational Oversight

  • Maintain accountability for team supervision, resource allocation, and profitability across all Bison locations.
  • Monitor workload distribution, project timelines, and operational deadlines to ensure efficiency and quality standards.
  • Oversee certifications, licenses, equipment, software, and other resources necessary for team success.

Personnel Management

  • Participate in hiring, termination, performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, promotions, and compensation decisions.
  • Implement procedures to uphold exceptional customer service and operational consistency.
  • Seek and incorporate feedback from peers and other teams to drive personnel improvement initiatives.

Strategic Planning & Business Development

  • Develop and execute business development strategies to secure sufficient work for team growth and sustainability.
  • Identify and pursue new service opportunities to expand organizational capabilities.
  • Ensure alignment of team goals with company objectives for revenue, profitability, and quality standards.

Management Team Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in management team discussions, policy implementation, and organizational programs.
  • Represent the team and its interests in management meetings, ensuring alignment with company-wide priorities.
  • Support cross-team initiatives and foster collaboration across departments.

What We’re Looking For

Required / Preferred Experience

  • 3+ years of air quality experience preferred, with ambient air monitoring experience strongly desired
  • Hands‑on experience with field work and data validation/reporting, including:
  • Meteorological instrumentation (meteorological stations)
  • Pollutant measurement instrumentation (SO₂, NO₂, CO, particulate matter)
  • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and/or Industrial Hygiene
  • Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) development
  • Certification in ambient air monitoring, air quality, or a related specialty preferred (or equivalent professional credential)

Leadership Skills

  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop technical teams
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills
  • Business‑minded with experience managing budgets, workloads, and profitability

Location & Travel

This is an in‑office role, based in Helena, Billings, or Tucson, AZ.

Travel is expected approximately 20% of the time and may include:

  • Team development and training
  • Personnel management across offices
  • Client site visits and project support

Salary Range:

  • $140,000 to $160,000 per year, salary exempt position
