About NNSC
Founded at John Jay College in 2009, NNSC puts criminological theory into practice to prevent violence, minimize arrest and incarceration, and increase trust between law enforcement and the public. Around the world, NNSC implements violence reduction strategies to address community violence, intimate partner violence and other pressing violence related issues. Each approach begin with an in-depth analysis of violence and community dynamics; a strong partnership of community members, social service providers, government leaders, and law enforcement; promoting safety through robust outreach and support to those at greatest risk of violence; sharing vital crime data from law enforcement (LE) to inform community violence intervention (CVI) outreach; elevating communities’ messages against violence; and relying on law enforcement sanctions as a final resort.
Our staff of diverse, experienced advisors have extensive experience developing strategic interventions, driving replication, and taking these approaches to scale. NNSC has worked with hundreds of cities and collaborates nationally across the CVI and LE fields.
About the Role
This role focuses on conducting problem analyses to inform effective community violence reduction strategies.
The individual will examine patterns and drivers of violence using real-world qualitative and quantitative data, research evidence, and insights from community and public safety stakeholders. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong analytical and critical thinking skills, paired with the ability to translate complex findings into practical, prevention strategies. Experience working collaboratively with public safety partners and community-based organizations is valued, as is the ability to communicate insights clearly and effectively to diverse audiences to support informed decision-making and action.
This is a project-based role with short periods of intense work and some travel. Each project will have work that can be done flexibly around your schedule including working on: the initial data collected before the in-person problem analysis and the problem analysis report after the in-person problem analysis. While the in-person problem analysis can be scheduled at the most convenient time for you, it includes the travel days and two days on location at a US-based location to do data collection.
We anticipate that each project will be approximately three 35-hour weeks with a total of 3 projects in 4 months. There is the possibility to extend the role with additional projects.
