I. Job Summary:
Position is responsible for the revenue accounting including appropriate application of the ASC 606 guidance across all revenue streams at Shentel. This role requires the ability to exercise significant judgment in applying the five-step model to complex, multi-element contracts. This position works cross-functionally to provide data-informed financial insights that directly impact our public company disclosures, requiring strong analytical capabilities and a deep technical understanding of US GAAP.
II. Duties and Responsibilities:- Responsible for application of ASC 606 across all revenue streams (voice, video, data), including complex enterprise contracts, including identifying distinct performance obligations, standalone selling price (SSP) allocation, and constraints of variable consideration in compliance with ASC 606.
- Prepare, review, and post month-end journal entries for each period close, with particular focus on deferred revenue, contract assets, and incremental contact costs.
- Manage and reconcile balance sheet accounts, including but not limited to, accounts receivable, deferred revenue, and contract costs/assets, ensuring integrity between the subledger and general ledger.
- Lead the monthly and quarterly revenue close processes, performing detailed variance analyses, support the preparation of executive materials.
- Prepare revenue-specific schedules and disclosures to support the review and submission of SEC filings (Form 10-K and 10-Q), ensuring adherence to public company regulatory standards.
- Ensure strong operational oversight and execution of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls including process documentation and proper retention of audit records.
- Serve as a primary liaison for external auditors during quarterly reviews and the annual audit, providing timely and accurate documentation, analysis, and explanations for all revenue-related inquiries.
- Proactively partner with sales, legal, and product teams to review new deals and product offerings, providing technical accounting guidance to ensure compliant revenue recognition treatment before contracts are finalized.
- Participate in user acceptance testing (UAT) and provide subject matter expert (SME) support for enhancements or system migrations within the ERP (Oracle Fusion) and any dedicated revenue subledger systems.
- Drive process enhancements within the revenue and billing workflows to improve efficiency, increase accuracy, enhance automation, moving away from manual controls and data manipulation.
- Build subject matter expertise of the revenue billing front of house applications so that we can include key financial performance indicators (KPIs) related to revenue streams in developing actionable insights that support data-informed business decision making.
- Demonstrate your system savvy and process improvement skills to identify and implement continuous improvement in the accounting function.

II. Qualification Requirements:- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required; CPA is strongly preferred.
- 3-5+ years of progressive experience in accounting, with a minimum of 2 years of ASC 606 revenue recognition experience.
- Demonstrated experience in a publicly traded company is required, including working knowledge of SEC reporting requirements and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls.
- Experience in the telecommunications, fiber infrastructure, or utilities sector, particularly dealing with bundled services, subscription models, and long-term contracts, is highly preferred.
- Proven ability to interpret complex legal/sales contracts and accurately apply technical accounting standards (ASC 606) to determine revenue recognition treatment.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (i.e. complex formulas, pivot tables, data modeling) is required.
- Strong proficiency with large-scale ERP systems (i.e. Oracle, SAP, NetSuite), with direct experience in Oracle Fusion preferred.
III. Other Skills and Competencies
- Deep, demonstrable technical knowledge of US GAAP, specifically ASC 606, is required.
- Experience with advanced reporting and visualization tools (i.e. Oracle Business Intelligence, Tableau, Alteryx) is a plus.
- Exceptional analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with a strong bias for accuracy and detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex accounting issues to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet strict deadlines in a dynamic public company reporting cycle.
