WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for an Analyst I or II who will work closely with the Service Analysis, Scheduling, and Service Planning team. This role leverages business intelligence tools, analytics, and machine learning techniques to analyze large datasets and support data-driven decision-making that improves service quality, sustainability, and operational performance.
The Analyst I designs and maintains performance metric dashboards, automated and ad hoc reports, and user-friendly BI applications to support internal analysis and strategic planning, including reporting to the National Transit Database. The role includes developing analytical models to evaluate service and process improvements, identifying optimization opportunities, and contributing to data-driven strategies that enhance key performance indicators (KPIs).
The Analyst II develops performance dashboards, user friendly BI applications, and automated or ad hoc reports—including those required for monthly and annual National Transit Database submissions. The position identifies opportunities to optimize services and processes, builds models to evaluate potential strategies, and contributes to data driven planning initiatives. The Analyst is a proactive, analytical problem solver who collaborates with staff across the organization and may mentor junior team members.
Salary Range
Analyst I - $63,687 - $80,000 annually
Analyst II - $74,689 - $95,000 annually
Responsibilities
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

Data Reporting & Business Intelligence

Prepare recurring performance reports (e.g., monthly metrics) including tables, charts, and narrative summaries for internal decision making, developing standard and ad hoc reports, dashboards, and performance metrics using approved BI and reporting tools.

Maintain documentation for BI reports, including data sources, definitions, assumptions, and known limitations.

Participate in testing and validating reporting tools, dashboards, and software updates to ensure functionality and data accuracy.

Partner with organizational stakeholders to identify opportunities to leverage operational and service data for improved decision-making.

Collaborate with cross functional leaders to design, enhance, and implement business intelligence solutions, recommending improvements to reporting methods, documentation standards, and analytical practices and present analytical findings to non technical audiences in clear, accessible language.

Develop user documentation, guides, and FAQs to support effective use of dashboards and BI tools.

Participate in project management activities and cross departmental initiatives as assigned.
Data Collection, Management & Quality Assurance

Support data quality initiatives by identifying discrepancies, conducting validation checks, and collaborating with data owners to resolve issues, assisting in the collection, preparation, validation, and documentation of data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and reliability.

Help maintain departmental databases and datasets, perform updates, data refreshes, and basic data transformations.

Design and implement data collection methodologies, systems, and processes that optimize data quality, efficiency, and usefulness, working with data contributors and owners to identify issues, resolve discrepancies, and ensure accuracy prior to publication.

Perform data audits, investigate anomalies, and diagnose discrepancies to strengthen data integrity, and assist in developing diagnostic reports to determine when data recollection or correction is required.

Support the collection, validation, and reporting of National Transit Database (NTD) statistics to ensure accurate, timely submission.
Data Analysis & Insights

Use established data models, queries, and analytic methods to analyze service, operational, and performance data, identifying trends, anomalies, and basic insights to support organizational decision making.

Perform ad hoc analysis and research for projects, presentations, regulatory reporting, and operational inquiries.

Conduct analysis of operational datasets using programming tools, BI platforms, and automation technologies, developing reports, dashboards, scorecards, and data visualizations to meet departmental and organizational analytics needs.

Prepare recurring metric reports featuring charts, graphs, and narrative summaries, perform statistical analyses to identify trends, evaluate service performance, and recommend operational improvements, producing ad hoc analyses and reports for both internal and external stakeholders.
Data Engineering, Modeling & Technical Development

Build, validate, and maintain data models and algorithms, and departmental relational databases to support analytics and reporting, clean, prepare, and integrate datasets—including external data sources—for accurate and comprehensive analysis.

Support development of advanced analytical tools and contribute to machine learning experimentation, testing, and model training, assist with software testing, upgrades, and implementation to ensure reliable functionality for end users.
External & Regulatory Reporting

Contribute to external reporting requirements (e.g., National Transit Database reporting) by compiling and validating data under guidance from senior staff.
Collaboration & Cross Functional Support
-
Assist in project management tasks as needed, working with team members, departments, vendors, and external partners to gather requirements, address data questions, and support analytic needs.
Learning & Professional Development

Continue developing skills in data analytics, BI tools, and transit industry knowledge through training and on the job experience, taking initiative in learning new concepts related to the transit industry.

Qualifications
WHAT YOU BRING

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Statistics, Computer Science or a similar field. Related experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.

Two (2) years of experience in data analysis, reporting, or business intelligence, including internships or academic projects preferred.

Basic to intermediate experience using Excel and SQL.
-
Exposure to BI or data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau preferred.
-
Data analytics certification or coursework is a plus.
Analyst II Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Statistics, Computer Science or a similar field. Related experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.

Three (3) years of experience performing data analysis using SQL, Oracle, MS Access, Excel, and data visualization tools.

Experience using advanced Excel features.

One (1) year experience in Power BI and/or Tableau.

Hands on experience with data analytics projects using Python, SQL, or R.

Experience working with relational databases at an advanced level.

Experience with ETL (Extract–Transform–Load) processes and tools preferred.

Experience with data mining, statistical modeling, machine learning methods, or simulation techniques.

Data Analytics Certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Basic programming or querying skills in SQL; familiarity with Python or R is a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to unpleasant and/or hazardous working conditions. This position works with multiple project timelines and is responsible for managing employees performing work of a complex nature.
Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently throughout an eight-hour period, reach vertically for overhead use as well as horizontally. Must be able to use a telephone or headset equipment.
Incumbents must be able to lift and move material weighing up to 20 lbs., perform work at a computer terminal for 6-8 hours a day, and function in an environment with constant interruptions.

Mobility Status
As a Remote position, your primary workplace is your home or another location in the state of Texas. The incumbent is expected to work in the office as needed and must have the ability to respond to a CapMetro facility within 24 hours if business needs require. Must be in-office for socialization, strategic collaboration, supervision, oversight, and accountability as needed. Mobility status is subject to change at any time based on business needs or organizational decisions.
This position is based in Austin, Texas. Successful out-of-state candidates must relocate to the state of Texas prior to start date .
