We are pleased to welcome applications for the 2026 AAMD Collections Stewardship Internship , a paid, hands-on learning opportunity designed to support undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in museums and cultural institutions.

Through one-on-one mentorship and practical experience, this internship invites students to engage deeply with museum collections care while learning how thoughtful stewardship ensures access for generations to come.

About The Internship

The Collections Stewardship Intern will work closely with professional staff in the Anchorage Museum's Collections Department, which includes Art & Cultural Belongings, Archives, and Library teams. The intern will gain foundational experience in collections care, museum registration, and collections management policies and procedures.

This preservation-focused internship emphasizes core museum competencies and offers meaningful insight into how collecting institutions function collaboratively across departments.

This is a paid, on-site internship supported by a grant from the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD).

What You'll Do

  • Work one-on-one with Collections staff to learn best practices in museum collections care and stewardship
  • Participate in a rehousing and inventory project focused on the Museum's contemporary art jewelry collection
  • Learn how to safely handle, document, preserve, and store museum objects
  • Assist with collections documentation and inventory processes
  • Gain familiarity with museum registration systems and collections policies
  • Collaborate with staff across multiple departments to understand how museums work as integrated systems
  • Build practical skills that support long-term access, preservation, and ethical stewardship of collections

Who We're Looking For

We Welcome Applications From Students With Diverse Backgrounds, Perspectives, And Lived Experiences. This Internship Is a Strong Fit For Individuals Who Bring

  • Current enrollment as an incoming or outgoing sophomore, junior, or senior at an accredited college or university
  • Interest in museums, art, history, cultural heritage, or collections-based work
  • Strong attention to detail and comfort working carefully with objects
  • Good hand skills and ability to follow handling and safety protocols
  • Curiosity, responsibility, and a willingness to learn
  • Comfort working independently and collaboratively in a professional environment

Students from groups traditionally underrepresented in museums are encouraged to apply, though all eligible applicants will be considered equally.

Internship Details

  • Schedule: 420 total hours, anticipated June?August 2026 (schedule finalized prior to hire)
  • Location: Anchorage Museum, Anchorage, Alaska (on-site required)
  • Stipend: $7,560 for the internship term
  • Professional Development: Eligibility for up to $3,000 in additional funding (subject to approval)
  • Deadline: April 26, 2026
