The Anesthesia Technologist is an important member of the operating theatre team. The Anesthesia
Technologist will carry out the following tasks:
- Consults Operating Room schedule to determine supply and equipment needs for procedures
- Sets up, tests, calibrates and operates complex physiologic monitors such as anesthesia workstations, intubation/airway devices, fiber optic endoscopes, physiologic monitors and infusion devices
- Troubleshoots anesthesia equipment malfunctions, routing non-functional equipment to the proper department for repair
- Supports anesthesia providers using aseptic or sterile technique with non-invasive and invasive patient procedures including peripheral and/or central intravenous and/or arterial line placement; airway management techniques including mask, endotracheal and/or emergency methods and regional anesthesia techniques
- Inserts peripheral intravenous catheters after validating competency
- Leads in the preparation of the patient for surgery and performs pre-operative assessments as requested by the anesthesiologist
- Ensures anesthesia providers have physiologic monitoring of patients notifying the anesthesia provider(s) of abnormal changes in vital signs and/or physical appearance of the patient
- Supports intra-hospital patient transport, insuring integrity of all monitoring and/or circulatory support devices
- Participates in the operating room infection control programs by performing duties such as maintaining cleanliness in anesthetic equipment in accordance with quality assurance programs
- Ensures strict adherence to established procedures to minimize operating room pollution
- Maintains appropriate supplies and equipment in supply carts, report needs/usage to supervisor as required
- Obtains supplies and equipment as requested by anesthesia providers
- Assists with patient laboratory tests and results including, but not limited to, ABG's, ACTs and other point of care tests
- Obtains blood products and pharmaceuticals assisting with preparation and delivery
- Maintains immediate availability to assist in routine and emergency procedures
- Participates in patient education programs
- Develops and sustains (maintains) own knowledge, clinical skills (mandatory training) and professional (portfolio or profile) awareness and maintains a professional profile
- Provides documented evidence of performance and maintenance of skills consistent with position
