Job Title: Animal Care & Facilities Attendant

Description: Finger Lakes SPCA of CNY is looking for candidates who support our mission to alleviate suffering, improve conditions, and prevent cruelty to animals. Candidates are expected to increase awareness and support of the organization by being knowledgeable of FLSPCA of CNY’S events and programs.

The Animal Care & Facilities Attendant's role is to keep animals fed, clean, and enriched, monitor for signs of stress as well as keeping work areas clean, tidy, and stocked, and perform daily maintenance of the facility including but not limited to, minor repairs to the facility, groundskeeping & landscaping, cleaning & stocking of the facility, organizing supplies, and perform safety inspections. Reports to the Shelter Manager.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide care for all animals at Finger Lakes SPCA of CNY.
  • Monitor & document basic animal welfare: eating, drinking, urination, defecation, and behavior to identify potential issues, and notify the Shelter Manager of such matters.
  • Handle animals of various temperaments.
  • Perform daily enrichment strategies for shelter animals.
  • Clean and disinfect animal cages, food/water bowls, litter pans, and all cage accessories following standard operating procedures.
  • Perform general housekeeping functions such as dishes, laundry, and stocking etc.
  • Input animal information into internal shelter software as needed.
  • Provide animal movement through the shelter as needed.
  • Restrain animals using low-stress handling techniques during health exams/vaccinations as needed.
  • Provide animals with medication as needed.
  • Provide customer service as needed.
  • Sanitize and disinfect the veterinary clinic pre- and post-surgery days.
  • Performs minor repairs to the facility, equipment, machines, appliances, and reports repairs & maintenance issues to the Shelter Manager.
  • Performs groundskeeping and landscaping duties year-round, including but not limited to lawn mowing, raking, shoveling, etc.
  • Organizes all general supplies in the facility.
  • Receives, sorts, and organizes donations
  • Maintains a log book of routine maintenance performed/due dates Ex.vehicle inspection, smoke detectors, Etc.
  • Works with the Shelter Manager to assign tasks to volunteers.
  • Performs monthly safety & maintenance inspections.
  • Carry out responsibilities per the company’s policies and applicable state/ federal laws.
  • Observe all safety rules and regulations for self and others.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Position Requirements:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent, Fear-free shelter certification required or ability to obtain within 6 months.

Experience: Handyman experience preferred, Animal experience preferred, Experience with animals of various temperaments preferred.

Skills: Ability to read and comprehend instructions. Ability to effectively communicate information in one-on-one and small group situations. Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Strong customer service skills are required. Strong organizational skills are required. Strong animal handling skills are preferred. Basic computer skills, ability to learn internal software. Ability to operate animal chip scanner, washer, and dryer, medical syringes, work vehicle, lawnmower, landscaping tools, basic handyman tools, and cleaning supplies.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, feel, speak, hear and see, lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 lbs. This employee is on their feet for most of the day. The Employee is exposed to different weather conditions. The Animal Care & Facilities Attendants, is scheduled Sunday–Tuesday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $16.00 - $17.00 per hour
